Next Generation Squad Weapon: Automatic Rifle | Shooting, Field Strip, and Performance | Textron

From the video:

This video, we are going to dig a little deeper into the Automatic Rifle (replacement for the SAW). This puppy is lighter than the current SAW, is select-fire, and hits with more energy than a M240 with this new 6.8 ammo.

Will they sell a semi-auto version to the public?  FNH sells a semi auto SAW, it's like $8,000+ or so, but they sell it.

no barrel change? how hot is that bad boy going to get at a sustained rate of fire? can a person link belts together? I noticed the ejection port for the brass was close to a the dude's hand when firing in off hand position.  a person with large hand would have to be careful or they will create a stoppage.

It’s not 6.8 Grendel.

It doesn’t eject brass, but it does eject spent plastic casings, and plastic is an insulator, so chamber temps build up slower and the cartridges are much cooler when freshly ejected.

I find this line of reasoning hard to believe.

A brass case gets yanked out so fast it is practically adiabatic.

Plus, what heats the brass case to begin with; combustion of smokeless powder!

That same combustion goes the entire length of the barrel.

But what do I know?

The chamber is not attached to the barrel of this weapon.

Its a single chamber revolver rifle.

Yup, chamber is like a little elevator.  The heat isolation is a neat trick that makes it rather cook-off-proof.

Ejection location is still retarded, though, and *will* cause problems in practice.

All real machineguns are cook-off proof.

So afer the military goes to this the surplus 556 ammo will be sold to civilians at a dime a round?

Praying we get surplus carbines now that 5.56 is obsolete.

Ugly Frankenstein-gun

Designed for water-cooled then scrapped later on to make it lighter and less maintenance. Known that cook-offs were common. If I had one I'd sell it, and buy something else. It is dangerous.
