More than a million Beijing residents undergoing coronavirus testing amid a fresh outbreak have been administered anal swabs, which are considered more accurate and raise the chances of detecting COVID-19, said a Chinese disease specialist.

The key districts of Daxing and Dongcheng began a mass testing drive on Friday after a nine-year-old boy tested positive for the more virulent strain of the virus, first discovered in London and the southeast of England last month.

Health authorities in the Chinese capital said they were aiming to screen more than two million people in 48 hours. Among them, around 1.6 million inhabitants in Daxing were to be given antibody tests, as well as throat, nasal and rectal nucleic acid swabs.

Anal swabs have been in use since last year, including in the major port city of Shanghai, but the method is so far reserved for individuals in potential COVID-19 hotspots, according to an infectious disease expert quoted by China's state broadcaster CCTV on Saturday.

Clues me in to the likelihood that the primary transmission method is fecal-oral.

Just like we knew it was. Most diseases get transferred this way. My gut tells me that lots of the Covid-19 transmissions were through the hands, and were transmitted due to inappropriate handwashing.

I swear they shoved the q-tips in alcohol before putting them up my nostrils. It burned so bad and then they rotated them. You would think I was bawling with how bad my eyes were watering.

My tests left me with terrible nosebleeds.

#1 most painful experience of my life was a DVT. #2 was the COVID test. Everything else I've experienced, including motorcycle accidents, was pretty far away from those things as far as pain intensity.

EDIT: The tests were also worthless. I tested negative for COVID while I was sick, but based on symptoms, contact tracing, and a long-term loss of smell, I had to have had COVID. So the #2 most painful experience of my life was a waste of time.

That sounds horrible. Mine was painful but not that painful. Vice president of the company I work for was sick for 2 weeks with a fever and other symptoms. He had 2 tests, both negative. I had to have a test because a guy I'm training on my machine got covid. I worked with him side by side for 2 weeks with no distancing and no masks. I wasn't sick and I tested negative.
