New Zealand, Iceland, the UK, Tasmania and Ireland are the places best suited to survive a global collapse of society, according to a study.
The researchers said human civilisation was “in a perilous state” due to the highly interconnected and energy-intensive society that had developed and the environmental damage this had caused. .. To assess which nations would be most resilient to such a collapse, countries were ranked according to their ability to grow food for their population, protect their borders from unwanted mass migration, and maintain an electrical grid and some manufacturing ability. Islands in temperate regions and mostly with low population densities came out on top. .. Jones added: “We chose that you had to be able to protect borders and places had to be temperate. So with hindsight it’s quite obvious that large islands with complex societies on them already [make up the list]. “We were quite surprised the UK came out strongly. It is densely populated, has traditionally outsourced manufacturing, hasn’t been the quickest to develop renewable technology, and only produces 50% of its own food at the moment. But it has the potential to withstand shocks.” .. Places that did not suffer “the most egregious effects of societal collapses and are therefore able to maintain significant populations” have been described as “collapse lifeboats”, the study said. New Zealand was found to have the greatest potential to survive relatively unscathed due to its geothermal and hydroelectric energy, abundant agricultural land and low human population density. .. He said the coronavirus pandemic had shown that governments could act quickly when needed. “It’s interesting how quickly we can close borders, and how quickly governments can make decisions to change things.” But he added: “This drive for just-in-time, ever-more efficient, economies isn’t the thing you want to do for resilience. We need to build in some slack in the system, so that if there is a shock then you have the ability to respond because you’ve got spare capacity. “We need to start thinking about resilience much more in global planning. But obviously, the ideal thing is that a quick collapse doesn’t happen.” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/28/new-zealand-rated-best-place-to-survive-global-societal-collapse I've seen 28 Days Later, the UK does not fare well. If you don't mind communism or nuclear fallout I'm sure New Zealand would be a great place to survive a global collapse.

As much as I like Iceland and Tasmania, they can barely feed their present population. They are net importers of basically everything. In a global societal collapse, they would circle the toilet.

The UK has to import around half now, although if push came to shove they could probably just be like "Sorry, Norway, your oil belongs to us now". And all of those places (except perhaps the UK) could be easily conquered.... Iceland literally has no military. NZ and Ireland's military are less well armed than many US SWAT teams. |

That is based on an assumption that the diverse people coming are worth a damn. As we know, they are not. However, I do not believe the Guardian has ever said that diversity was a strength. NZ proximity to China is a huge negative. |

Lived there for 5 years. I can attest.
90% of the plants are edible or fruit producing and there are ALOT of plants. You can go out in the bush and accidentally survive. |

Granted they have the best hydro and hydrothermal on the planet, but they couldn't produce a gallon of fuel, 5 feet of copper wire or a piece of plywood if their lives depended on it. Before global trade got there… they literally depended on driftwood as a construction material. |

An author/podcaster I like lives in Tasmania.
Tasmania (or any of Australia) is certainly NOT the place to go right now.The whole country has been locked down for over a year now; protests, military in the streets of Sydney, roadblocks,etc...and their gov just announced the nationwide lockdowns will continue until 80% of the population is vaccinated Said author drove to Hobart. He got a notification on his phone to return home. The police went to his house the next day and warned him that he would get a fine in the mail if he drove to the city again and have stopped back since just to "checkup". That's been happening to people there for almost a year and a half now, but...US news doesn't report on it. Speed |

Decent documentary on it. They are managing to regrow swathes of forest. Same with forests in the UK, all cut down and now the animal population will destroy any seeds that sprout so they started fencing areas just outside the forests to prevent grazing to allow the tree sprouts and undergrowth to spread. |
