Never been a glove guy other than cheap mechanix I use when shooting a lot and hand guards start heating up.

Decided I want a nice pair of gloves for winter this year. Temps to about 20 degrees, working outside all day.

Any suggestions on where to start? Would prefer something not super thick so j can actually use my hands still.

Update for more specifics of what I'm looking for

Quoted:
Was hoping for something thinner and dexterous that was good at stopping wind and water while still being moderately warm. Touch screen compatibility would be nice too.

Anything like this exist? Guy I work with said arcteryx makes climbing gloves that he likes.

I've been very impressed with these.  My hands usually sweat in them in 30* weather:

winter golf gloves -> light fleece gloves -> mittens

Heavy winter gloves are a totally pointless invention.

I use outdoor research touchscreen ones (PL400?) for when it’s cold, and OR mittens/liners for when it’s cold as shit.

This was a thread I had last weekend. They are doing 25% off site wide on Black Friday.

I work outside year round and I sweat by these gloves. Some people apparently dont like them but I think theyre sissies.

Outdoor Research Tactical line, can't remember the name of the ones I have but they are a Goretex, insulated gloves. They are the main glove we wear all winter up here, they are good enough to keep me warm while still letting me shoot, write notes, operate a radio, etc without taking them off. Just go on their website, they do have some that are touchscreen compatible as well.

Having had clothing and equipment from all these companies, OR is Arcteryx quality with TNF pricing.

Interesting. I'll have to look them up.  I have a few ORI shirts and love them and have a north face bionic 2 softshell and like it too.

I like Outdoor Research Gripper gloves.  Windstopper fleece and available with sensor finger.  If they aren't warm enough try mittens as heavier gloves suck.

Check out a company called Stormr. Their Typhoon and Strykr line of gloves. Waterproof/windproof and the only "gloves" I wear when in -0 weather all day. You're welcome.

I prefer light gloves and an extra layer/heavier garment on my core.  I want to maintain my dexterity.

I prefer mechanic type gloves or light wool gloves in that temp range.

After being miserable running a chainsaw in 12 degree weather a couple years ago I decided I need some really nice cold weather gloves.

After a bunch of research and reading reviews I bought a pair of these.

Amazon Product
  • Silicone Grip Liner Palm
  • Heat Pack Pocket/Shell Pocket on Back of Liner
  • Pre-Curved Construction

Not really any better than the gloves I had before.

Back to the drawing board.

For above zero F, I've found that most quality insulated gloves work just fine. Especially if you keep moving.

On the other hand, I've yet to find gloves that do a lot of good in sub zero temps...especially if you AREN'T moving around.

Bottom line...if you want to stay warm, stay active.

20 degrees? I'm not going outside for any reason. No gloves needed.

at a certain point you have to make the decision of if you want warmth or dexterity. mittens are far warmer than gloves.

Split finger mittens are nice, work better than gloves. You're going to lose some dexterity the colder it gets because you need more material/buffer to stay warm.

I went on a search for good cold weather gloves prior to this deployment and eventually settled on the Convoy Sensor from Outdoor Research for my "active" glove.

Touchscreen capatible, goretex shell, leather palm, dexterous enough to pull triggers, grenade pins, manipulate radios, etc.

Zero complaints from me

narrowed it down between arc'teryx alpha FL and outdoor research convoy/outpost, seems the convoy and outpost are basically the same except the outpost has a little extra insulation and longer cuff.

cant decide what i really want without trying them on and since no where in town or near me has any in stock im gonna order all 3 and see what i like. maybe add in the OR arete glove to try as well.

KINCO 1721GR-M Men's Lined Leather Palm Gloves, Suede Cowhide, Green Fabric Back, , Russet
$15 on Amazon.
Grab some THIN glove liners for under the KINCOs.
I worked outside, on the Lake Michigan shore this past winter. Temps from upper 30s to -14F. Usually the 20s. Tried a few different gloves and quickly settled on this pairing. They are VERY flexible even when brand new.

Stay safe

These are what I wear at work. Very warm, dextrous but not completely waterproof. Cheap enough to try out without being upset you spent too much. I've worn them in below zero while handling metal without being cold.

Ninja Ice

I also have some Carhartt ones that I can't wear until it's -20 F or my hands get too hot.

20deg isn’t really cold to me, but i use Ice Armor gloves in cold weather. Like -20 and down.

20+.... the “cold” weather mechanix gloves would be fine.
