Surely you can find a clean 2wd 99-2005 Silverado 1500 for that in FL.

Heck even a 99-03 F150 2wd.

I paid 3200 for this one a few years ago and it was MINT.

Do you want it to run?

For 5k, good luck.

Hell no.  You should be able to find a Ranger for that.

For what it is worth, that is IMHO the best size for a compact truck ever.  I loved my Dakota of that era, the next generation Dakota was just two big to be a good compact truck.

You could probably find a Ranger in that price range as well

You're going to end up with a 20 year old vehicle that's soon to need a major repair valued at greater than the original purchase price. Just be sure it's $5k you can live without in the next year, because it's no fun being upside down on a vehicle that you can't afford to even fix.

Locally, I see nice 2000 vintage Ford and Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 pickups all day long in that price range.

5k doesn’t buy a lot of truck these day, anyone saying differently hasn’t shopped used trucks lately.

Last year I paid $3,800 for a GMC Sierra with extended crew cab and 205,000 miles. We did a brake job on it, but everything else seems solid according to my mechanic. It’s not a daily driver, but I make sure to drive it once a week to keep the fluids moving and everything lubricated. I know full well if it needs a major repair it likely gets sold for a grand. Came in handy when we moved last year. Mainly bought it as a bug out vehicle to get to our property in the mountains. Enough room for my wife and I to sleep inside, and we got a bed tent and an air mattress that we can use when the weather is nicer.

Used cars and trucks are high as shit right now.  Just like $500 ARs are going for $1000, $2000 cars are going for closer to $5000.

Double your budget and look at older fleet vehicles.

Two years ago I bought a 2014 Ram 4x4
5.7 hemi quad cab with 120k miles.
$13,000

It has been flawless and the 8-speed trans gets me 21-22mpg with a 93 octane tune

You can find a high mileage Tacoma Prerunner  V6 for around that if you scratch around long enough. You’ll need to do the timing belt if it ain’t already done. Rest will be fluid and general upkeep. Oh. And frame rot depending on location. Not sure how much of a truck you need.

That’s where I’m at anyway. Just need a truck to haul stuff ever so often, leave some miles off my T4R, maybe make a future project out of. Just needs to get me by until new Tacoma’s are dropped or I 100% to Bronco.  I’ve saved a couple Tacos in my area but not in a need to buy right now so I haven’t bit.

This.  Do you actually NEED a truck, or do you just want a truck?  If it's want... just get an econobox instead, your money will go much farther.

If it's a need, you have your work cut out for you and you'd best know how to turn a wrench.

8 years ago I bought a 2003 regular cab Chevy s10 4x2 in va with 22k miles for $5,500. My wife drives it for a daily commuter in the spring summer and fall so it doesn’t get rusted out in the mn salt. Today it has 43k miles. It has the 4.3 engine so that baby will last another 20 years lol. Best vehicle purchase I’ve ever made. Only money I’ve put in it was for new tires bc the originals dry rotted. They still had lots of tread on them.

Should not be too hard to find a decent domestic truck from 2000 +- a few years. You will, in all likelihood, need to do some kind of work on it in the next year or two, so be prepared for that. If you check it out thoroughly, though, you ought to be able to avoid major headaches.

I got a 99 F150 4x4 about 5 years ago, ~130k miles, $5,500. All I have had to do so far is replace the fuel pump and do the brakes (in addition to obvious things like oil and coolant changes, tires, etc).
