Anyone ever had success dealing with a neck issue that I'm having due to working out?  Back in the fall I woke up one morning an my fingertips were slightly numb on one hand on all fingers except the pinky.  Barely noticable, but it never went away.  After that I noticed my neck would get super tight mainly while squatting.  Two month ago I was making great progress, but had to take 1.5 months off due to hockey tournaments and family stuff.  My neck was now locking up pretty good, but I was killing it.  After that time off, I took 10% off my lifts to be safe.  First good deadlift session(which includes SSB squats), my neck locked bad and my fingers and more numb.  I cannot make it through any workout anymore and mainly just quit after the main lift.

I've been doing whatever I can, but everything hurts my neck now.  I dialed it back to 3 mile walk, 15 minute Airdyne, KB swings, pull-ups, push-ups and I'm still hurting from the second I do anything but cardio.

My neck is a mess when I wake up also and usually my hand is numb, but once get going it goes away.  I have full movement all day, no problem at work at all.  It's like it never happened  Then as soon as I attempt any workout, it's fucked until I work it out by relaxing or laying down.  Only stretch that works is chin tucks, then tilting my head back at the same time, but the pain comes back on the next set.  It's extremely discouraging.

Long post, not complaining and I know I probably need a doctor.  Just curious if anyone has had any similar problems.  I've lifted my whole life and had many little tweaks, but this one really is killing my motivation.

Thanks for reading my long-winded question.

Yeah, I had numbness due to basically pinching a nerve in the neck. It happened over time due to my neck not having the proper curve and then I got injured while lifting (doing a movement, got distracted, turned my head, and then later that day my hand went numb). I went to urgent care a few days later and the dr sent me for x rays and referred me to a clinic that does chiropractic, massage therapy, physical therapy, etc. The chiropractor worked on my neck, gave me exercises, etc. and it did get better. It'll take some time and work but with a good team you can probably get it sorted. But you need to go see a dr.

Definitely go see a Dr. Nerve pain is not to be messed around with.

Unfortunately, due to many years of BJJ, Judo, wrestling, etc. I’ve been dumped on my head and neck a good bit. The things I’ve found that work for me for the muscle pain have been to use a lacrosse ball or foam roller downstream of the affected area (rhomboid pain = roll the lats). We’ll see in a few decades if I didn’t mess myself up for the long haul, but I’ve never had to take breaks from training because of it.

Get mri done from a spine specialist. My left arm started getting nim pins and needles getting worse until I had surgery a month ago. Degenerative disc disease had eliminated almost 2 discs. Impact on my spinal cord was only relieved by surgery. Hoping to get back to normal but still painful with titanium screws in a platform in my cervical area. Recovery is slow and work is patient with me understanding since supervisor had back surgery last year. Don't shrug it off you may get stuck that way.

You have a dusk bulging and putting pressure on a nerve. I had ACDF surgery in 2013. It kept me out of a wheel chair but the damages I already had never reversed.

A little late to the party here, but this sounds right.    I had similar issues, followed by weakness developing in arms.   Here is a a simple test, sit and have someone gently push down on the top of your head as you turn your head side to side.  If you feel tingling, buzzing, or an odd sensation in your arms, you likely have a disk issue.   Mine was C6 and C7, which ruptured.  Tried meds, epidurals, etc.  Eventually had an anterior spinal fusion (was in my 30's at the time, feeling like i was in my 60's).   Almost overnight improvement.  10 years later, no side effects, no issues.  Essentially fully recovered.

Get checked by a doc.

Similar situation to a couple previous posters. Deterioration of a couple disks in my neck, leading to pinching of the nerve bundle feeding my left arm. I have pain on the left/rear of my neck like I slept wrong, a feeling like something is jammed behind my left shoulder blade, a feeling similar to being whacked in the funny bone, pins and needles in the back of my left hand, and numbness in the tip of my left pinky and ring finger

Several months of PT, exercises, and traction (neat machine that pulls on my head), and no improvement. Most likely going to wind up with titanium disks.

You need to see a professional.

Thanks for the replies guys.  My wife finally made an appointment for me because I was being stubborn.  I feel like light stretching is only making things worse.  Sleeping and waking up in the morning is absolutely brutal.  Our physical therapist at work said I just need a little PT, but he's obviously not a doctor.  I will update with what the doctor tells me on Thursday.

So I ended up going to a chiro who everyone I asked recommended.  Diagnosed with Upper Crossed Syndrome

He nailed everything that was wrong with me.  I probably strained my neck at some point also and never let it heal.  I've been able to sleep through the night, but mornings are still rough.  Sent me home with a bunch of stretches and see if I can unwind some tightness in the next two weeks, then we'll go from there.

I had radiculopathy from a neck injury at work.  Range of motion exercises eventually fixed it.  Also, believe it or not, try one of those foam neck collars when you sleep.  They are annoying, sure help me quit a bit.
