It was a training tool.

Some seats are preserved and decorated as memorials by family members who knew where their loved ones sat and they have access to it.

Granted it is taking up some valuable space, the families will be the most affected. Perhaps the visits are few now.

There were two mentors during my career at the "kite factory" for whom I had the utmost respect.  One of them was onsite at the TWA 800 reconstruction for many months.  When he would talk about that time, it was clear that it was a life changing event for him.  Sort of a hallowed ground sort of vibe.
