Hey All,

Just curious about doing VPN with Nord.   They have a Two Year (+ 3 months "free") = 27 months special which works out to $3.55 / month

WHAT would a VPN do for me?

Keep my WiFi online banking sessions from being hacked?

Keep embarrassing website URLs off my browser history?

Does it provide any benefit for Video Streaming?

Is $3.55 / month a good deal, and is NORD reputable and a decent to good VPN provider?

Thanks!

A vpn service like Nord is useful (but NOT a cure all) for keeping your ISP and Fed.gov from spying on you.  It can also be useful for getting around some streaming restrictions (like say you want to watch content thats only available in another country).  Its not a solution for poor local network security, or poor application security, or user ignorance.   Nord btw is excellent if you need a VPN service.

Banking sites all use HTTPS, so unsecure WIFI is not an issue.  That said, if you're not running WPA2, you need help.

Wont do shit for what your browser stores locally.

Yes, see my top level statement.  For typical American content, its not required.

If you do need a VPN service, that price is excellent.  For your needs though, I wouldn't bother.

@cruze5
Can you elaborate on the concerns and provide a few reputable examples?

1) All the data the ISP may be collecting is then available for the VPN provider to collect.
2) In what ways does a VPN (as an egress to the Internet at large) hamper government spying?

The above links are reasonably well-respected by the privacy nerds of /r/privacy. No one's 100% guaranteed to keep you safe from 5/9/14 eyes but not hard to find a vpn that will keep your internet activity hidden from your ISP.

This is awesome:
Using a VPN will not keep your browsing habits anonymous, nor will it add additional security to non-secure (HTTP) traffic.

If you are looking for anonymity, you should use the Tor Browser instead of a VPN.

If you're looking for added security, you should always ensure you're connecting to websites using encrypted DNS and HTTPS. A VPN is not a replacement for good security practices.

If you're looking for additional privacy from your ISP, on a public Wi-Fi network, or while torrenting files, a VPN may be the solution for you as long as you understand the risks involved.

It let's you download things without people knowing you're downloading things.

Like torrenting videos, programs, 3d cad files for guns, etc.

You can download these items without your ISP knowing that you are.

*I am not condoning downloading illegal content, just making a statement on one of VPNs most widely known reason for using.

Lets be more specific: these VPNs let one download things without their ISP knowing they are downloading things.  Everyone else along the chain knows they are, and if the VPN provider is keep logs then they become the source to subpoena instead of one's ISP.

Agreed.

That's why it's important to choose a VPN that does not keep logs. I chose Express VPN because they supposedly do not keep any activity or connection logs so even if they're subpoenaed they would have no data to provide.

Here's another one to think about, the vast majority of all the VPN providers out there has one of three different Chinese parent corporations.

Express vpn on a r7000 router is great. Vpn for all home devices. Set it and forget it.

Proton VPN servers are in Switzerland.

Switzerland has some pretty strict privacy laws.
