A little over a year ago, my ex-wife and my sons returned from Hawaii to find a new Kona Blue Mustang GT in the driveway.  My ex's parents had purchased it as a birthday gift for my then 15 year old son.

I was not thrilled about it to say the least. I had no input in the decision.  I remember how I was when I got my license.

I posted about it here and the same doom and gloom in my head appeared in the replies.  I said then and I will say now that he is a wonderful son with a damn good head on his shoulders.

I am happy and so very proud to report that my son's 17th birthday is today and he made it through his maiden driving year without a ticket or an accident. Holy shit.

Sure, it was a different year with COVID19 and all, but he put 6,000+ miles on that car.  I know damn well he wasn't driving Miss Daisy around and his safe and legal year was as much luck as level-headedness.  But I couldn't have done the same.

So, I intend to do what any other proud, responsible, red-blooded American father would do.  We are researching exhaust options from Roush, Borla, and others right now.

Awesome job on your son's part, I remember that thread.

Nice! At that age I had already totalled my first car and was a little more than a year away from totalling a second

Congrats, hope it sticks.

I had an ‘89 Buick Century that got jumped, crashed and raced. I shiver at the trouble I would’ve gotten in with a new mustang.

I still have not put an exhaust on my 2015 GT.

Really not sure what to get and I have looked around a lot since buying it new.

I am tired of the overly obnoxious coyotes that just crackle and pop non stop.   Borla and Magnaflow are the worst offenders with straight through cannister style mufflers.

I am honestly tempted to just delete the resonsonator at the mid pipe to see how it sounds with a proper X-pipe.    Then consider mufflers again after that.

If your kid's car has the active exhaust you have a pretty decent sounding option straight out of the gate.

There is a ford racing "sport" exhaust that sounds pretty good.   99% sure it is Borla but not sure what the Borla part number or in house name of the muffler is.

I do not want super loud but rather loud enough to gear for downshifts and heel&toe shifting.   I have other stuff that is plenty loud and soon to even do cut outs on one car.

Forget the speeding tickets...Giving a new teen driver a car like that is like giving a kid a loaded gun and not explaining anything. Very very very very easy to severely hurt himself or worse. Highschool kid had a 03 Cobra when they were new, went to pass someone going up a hill on a double yellow, hit a SUV head on and killed everyone.

What a fucking stupid decision your in-laws made. The first year is cake...It is when he gets over the power of the car and feels comfortable with it.

Wife's GT has an active exhaust, we just wanted a LITTLE bit more, and have the same feeling about raspy crackly Coyotes. Got her the Ford Performance Boss Style X-Pipe w/ side exits for christmas.

Theory is you get the X-Pipe and res delete giving the Active just a bit more bite, and the side pipes add a little depth and "fuller" sound without having to get raspy to get loud.

Find out soon.

When I was 16, I got a ticket for 84 in a 55 and that was with a bone stock 89 Chevy Silverado.

I would have had my license pulled if my dad was dumb enough to buy me a sports car.

My first car was an 84 Mustang LX with the 5.0 v8 engine (In 1988).  Ironically enough, my one and only ticket came while driving a 4cyl Isuzu Pup...

My cousin got one as a HS graduation gift. He has received quite a few tickets as a result, including one at over 100 in a 70. Somehow his dad was able to have that one fixed.

Lol.

I drove a 66 mustang with a 300rwhp 302 and t5 as a daily driver from 18-21. Sold it when I got married.

I NEVER got a ticket in it and I raced a hundred+ people on the street with it, did burnouts in parking decks, got stranded several times when stuff blew up (dist gear, driver's side axle, rear main seal), ran from the cops once in it (successfully).

Luckily it had a drag suspension on it (handled poorly, 6 cylinder springs up front with 70/30s, super hard rear leafs with traction bars, spool in the 8"), and 165r15 front runners so if you drove like an idiot in traffic, you'd wreck. You couldn't slam on the brakes without it locking up and skidding. It felt like 100mph at 60mph. You could turn the steering wheel to the left or right ~10* when going straight and it wouldn't do anything. You had to drive it incredibly defensive around town.

My guess would be he's already been in a situation where he could have wrecked his car but luckily saved it. Hopefully that fear will cause him to think ahead in future situations.

Man, at that age I had no car of my own. But, I discovered the top speed of the family car and that it could fly off of certain rises and that 4 wheel drifting around corners was no big deal. I can't even begin to imagine how I did not crash or die.

Good for your Son and you OP.

At 16 I was 140lb and had the fastest motorcycle you could buy at the time (Kawasaki H2).
My father hated the idea but he used to race motorcycles so he reluctantly understood.

It was a learning curve and I managed to stay out of trouble.

One of my friends was riding a 600cc sportbike at that age.
He survived without incident.

IMO, the "buy the kid a fast car and something bad is going to happen" thing is a bit overblown.
Some kids are going to take more risks then others regardless of what they are driving. I see more young people doing dumb shit in 10 year old altimas, beat up old accords, moms minivan etc then I do in performance cars.
At least performance cars handle and brake exceedingly well, far better then a slammed 20 year old Accord with bald tires, and both the Mustang and the beater are capable of kill you speeds.

My perf pack tires were gone by 5500 miles.

I never did a single burn out.   But I did exceed 1.1g cornering on a regular basis if the accelerometer is to be believed.

They were stupid dangerous in temps below 70deg.   Like roll hard into gas in 3rd gear and would get tire spin.

Went to Nittos when I changed wheels and hate the NT555s.   Not as much warm weather cornering grip despite being wider front/rear but a fair bit better in colder weather.

280 versus 340 tread wear ratings from Perelli to Nitto.

Next up will likely be GT350 sized Michelins.

My 66 is likely to hand my 2015 it's ass soon.
