Anyone else do this or am I just a bit odd? Anytime a band is mentioned in places like GD, I look up old
pics to see what they used for equipment; mainly guitars. It's facinating how timeless some of the most common
models are.

Anyway, there's a Beach Boys thread today, so:

Precision bass, (model?) Rickenbacker, Jaguar

I actually prefer this to looking up new band gear pages. Seems like everyone is using Kempers and Axe Fx today, and the complexity and almost endless options for sound shaping are frankly too much.  I am not saying that they don't sound great and are probably most practical, but it loses some of the organic feeling and vibe. It's like holding an LP jacket and putting the needle down on the vinyl, vs. pulling up a Pandora station.  So yeah, when I see a guitar going straight into a tube head, or floor pedals or tape delays, I get hit with a wave of nostalgia.

I will never forget the feeling when I got my MXR distortion plus and Flanger and plugged them in for the first time.  I probably spent 5 hours playing every song that had a flanger on it.  I feel bad for kids today.

I do the same as I'm far more mentally invested in the gear since i restarted playing in middle age than i was as a teen or young adult. Hell, I backed an Elvis impersonator with an HSS Charvel knock off and a Peavey Backstage 50 in the late 80's so maybe ignorance was bliss?
