I've always been of the mindset that hypnotism is bullshit.
It's just doofuses doing what they are told to do.

I saw a "professional" hypnotist stage show many years ago.
He called several people up on stage and walked them through what was going to happen.
Along the way, he culled a few, sending them back to their seat.
All the ones who were left did exactly as he told them, along with "forgetting" what they had done and everything.

But maybe that's all there is to it. The "power of suggestion" is literally just a lack of skepticism.
The desire of a certain segment of the population to "go along with it".

Is it possible that a huge portion of the American public has been "hypnotized" into believing what they see on the magic light box?
Are they all just afraid of getting thrown off the stage, so they go along with the show?
Is everyone really gullible, or are they just playing along because it's what's expected?

My faith in humanity is lower than ever.

If I was the guy that threw away his password to his bitcoin wallet that is now worth $230 million and he has two guesses left I would try a hynotist, got nothing to loose.

Maybe you've been hypnotized by nazi white supremacists?  Which would explain why you are on this website right now too.

Some people have no soul and are literally just filler in this test of life. Meat popsicles. Democrats. How those of us with a soul, with the power of reason, deal with these soulless beings is what life is all about. Ymmv.

My dad quit his 20yr habit of smoking 2-3 packs of smokes a day the minute he walked out of a quit smoking hypnotism one on one session.
Walked out, crumpled what he had in his pocket and has been done for decades now.

Hypnotism is real.   Propaganda is real.  Ignorance is real.   They are three completely separate phenomena.   Learn the difference OP, or be like the people who fall victim to it.

Interesting, but what does that prove?
To me, it proves that he did a better job of quitting when someone else told him to quit than when he was trying to do it on his own.

What sort of conclusion can I draw from your example, except that your father's "willpower" actually exerted less influence over his own behavior than what someone else expected him to do?

Funny, he says the hypnotic experience was crap and he was just ready to quit. Either way I'm glad he did.

Guy I used to know well did the same. Boom, done and never smoked again. I guess it works for some people.

I used to think it was bullshit, tl;dr -it's not.

It's not magic, but it's not bullshit.

Full disclosure, I am a certified hypnotist now and use it to treat my wife for insomnia, and a few very close friends for a few different things.

Edited to add; hypnosis can also be used recreationally if the person wants that

That is like giving a hypnotist $230M. Big mistake.

LOL,

They were faking it because either...

A. they were paid to.

or

B. they wanted the attention.

I'm sure some people can be hypnotized, but I damned sure can't be.

Neural linguistics.

Do you remember when Obama would say “I am going to fundamentally transform the United States!”

What he was saying was .”....mentally trance...." .

My Dad went to a hypnotist for several sessions in order to quit smoking after suffering a collapsed lung.  He once told me that during the last session, he could hardly wait to get out of the office so he could smoke a cigarette in the parking lot.

Mass media - television sitcoms and their subtle programming, MSM, most pop culture - is as harmful to society as any hard drug habit.

It is, in a real sense - the opiate of the masses.

Let's ask @CharlieSheen.  In his own words, he quit his (impressively extreme) drug habits by "blinking his eyes, mind decided, boom done.  Winning."

I think hypnotism on stage is bullshit. Making people quack an what not.

But I also think "hypnotism" in the sense of extreme relaxation trying to recall previously forgotten details that are deep in your mind can be legit.

I think I'm one of the folks who can't be put under.  Never tried a professional therapist, just the ones that bring people up on stage.  It was my highschool senior party so I know there weren't paid actors in the crowd.  Two different times in that type of venue and I got nothing at all.

I'd love another tool to make quitting nicotine easier so I think I'll give it a shot.

When my hubby was going to college at ERAU, they had a hypnotist do a show at the school auditorium. It was packed. They chose students from the audience to come up on stage, some of which we knew. They weren't paid shills.

Some people were hypnotized others weren't (the ones that weren't went back to their seats), a few people in the first couple of rows went under too. It was very funny, until one of the people that was on stage (a certifiably strange guy) started behaving oddly to say the least. I think the schtick was everyone had a pet bunny in their laps and they were suppose to love on it and baby it. Well, he started beating and choking out the little nonexistent bunny, with an exceedingly scary facial expression. The whole audience was taken aback. He was escorted off the stage... posthaste. It was not a HAHAHA moment.

It kinda put a whole new spin on the show.

There are, in fact, folks who are too stupid to hypnotize.

It only works on part of the population.

It is real, and it works.

I'm pretty sure there are R-rated hypnotists who are able to get people to say and do things (in front of an audience) that they would never do otherwise.  I have never seen it myself but I am pretty sure it is a thing and the participants are truly hypnotized.
