so when they go for high speed tests out there, do they prepare the ground like a runway or something? or did he just get bad luck.

I spent 10 years living within 50 miles of that goop. I was actually pretty close to where they got stuck. Lots of people go out to that area and simply don't understand how easy it is to get into a life-or-death situation. It hit 120 degrees near the salt flats, there are roads everywhere and the Confusion mountain range is incredibly appropriately named, even for someone that is in them every weekend.
I won't say one bad thing about getting stuck out there, it's easy to do. |

Would have swallowed my Excursion without a blink. |

No cell phone coverage for 50-100 miles in some areas. And it's a scary place to be if you aren't familiar with it. I was actually hiking along once while coyote hunting and found a big cougar den with little cub tracks in the dust. I already had a coyote puppy at home, but it was really tempting to see if I could figure out a way to grab a kitten before momma got home. Would have been a terrible place to die. It would take weeks for anyone to find you, I was just south of the Dugway Proving Grounds at that point. Nobody goes there.... |

Anything past that was a question of how badly he wanted to get involved  I actually attempted a recovery much like Matt does except all I had was a piece of crap F250. I ended up busting a tie rod and it was a rodeo to get back to the road but we got the guy out. Since he had gone out against the advice of our wrecker driver and was an ass about it our driver made sure and charged enough so that my repairs were covered

I just had flashbacks to An Najaf Irag, August 2004...
The is a dry lake outside of the old city, one of our scout teams (or may have been a USMC team) got a HMMWV mired worse than that Taco. I was a BFV Section leader at the time and got FRAGO’ed to escort an M88 to recover the HMMWV and team. Got that same feeling when we got on the lake bed as in the video... 28 tons of M2A3 Bradley giving all she got to maintain forward momentum. When we made contact, I was was providing overwatch while the M88 went to work recovering the truck. As soon as they started pulling, the M88 broke through the crust and sank right in. The mechanics got the bright idea to use my Bradley as an anchor to winch themselves out. This worked exactly as expected, and my Brad got mired to the point that you could step off the side armor onto tjr lakebed. By this point, the JAM (Mahdi Militia) fighters start lobbing mortars at us, which turned out not so bad. They weren’t very good with getting round on target without walking them in... when the mortars impacted the lakebed, they would sink deep into the mud resulting in a nice brown geyser if it the round actually detonated (some didn’t). I think that recovery mission ended up taking like 12-18hours before everything got unfucked. I know, CSB... but thanks for bringing back memories of some fun experiences.

Love his channel entertaining and educational. He talks about what he charges in one video said he could take three jeeps out before it cost more than taking a wrecker. I am amazed by what he does with a lot of experience and little equipment.

They pull drags behind trucks to help smooth out the actual race course as well, and walk it to pick up any debris. Land speed racing tires are really thin to prevent coming apart at high speed.
