https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/m1-abrams-tank-gets-new-round-can-destroy-almost-anything

"The AMP adds an important new capability. The existing canister round is only for short-range use with a maximum reach of about 500 meters. This makes it useless for dealing with one of the biggest threats to tanks, infantry equipped with anti-tank guided missiles like the Russian-made AT-14 Kornet, used in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. When used in airburst mode, the AMP can target groups of personnel at ranges of up to 2,000 meters: even if it does not disable a missile team, the round is likely to distract them enough so that they are not able to keep a missile on course."

Another important new capability is breaching walls. Currently, making a breach an infantry assault requires engineers to get next to the wall and emplace explosives. Three rounds of AMP will create a thirty-by-fifty-inch hole clean through a double-thickness reinforced concrete wall, big enough for troops to advance through. This includes cutting through the steel reinforcement bars, and breaching can be carried out from several hundred meters away," said Forbes.

That fireball from the tank barrel is worse that a 7" 5.56! How would they ever call a hit with that huge flash? Seems like they need a different propellant.

Supposed to (at least partially) replace the M830A1 MPAT round (which replaced the M830 HEAT round), the obstacle reducing M908 round, and the M1028 cannister round.

The main gun is getting upgrades too.

My first deployment we had tanks in Baghdad.  We fired a lot of main gun rounds but only had access to sabot, cannister, and HEAT, with a sprinkling of MPATs.  Can rounds were great for shredding a building right in front of you, but HEAT was really the only option we had for structures past a couple hundred meters and it sucked, as it was definitely not the right tool for that.   Sabot and HEAT didn't really help us out much in the city. We always complained about a lack of HE options, but really near the end of our 15 month trip tanks and Bradleys were swapped out for MRAPs anyway.  The only thing the Army got right implementing on the Abrams in a MOUT/COIN environment was finally adding a machine gun shield for the loader, which ironically were sitting in a dirt lot on our COP when I got hit with a frag grenade dropped off a 6 story building while I was in the loaders hatch of the lead vehicle in a movement through a downtown area.  The damn thing airbursted right in front of my 240 and that shield would have eaten everything that hit me.

We worked with what we had though until then, we engaged quite a bit across the Tigris as the area on the other side in our battlespace was not secured by the coalition.  Sometimes you would get lucky and the overpressure might blow a shitty roof off, or it might catch fire, but otherwise you just got a small hole and some splatter.  Using it against walls was an absolute worthless endeavor.  Essentially hard cover, machine guns, and shitty optics in the A1's were the only things the tanks brought to the fight.  Once MRAPs started coming out in the next year with armor and better optics there was no reason to bring the tanks out anymore.

Cannister in the extent of it's MOUT usefulness

Thanks for the sabots and HEAT rounds Army!
