There's one, for sure. Undeniably.

IMO the likeliest SF story to come true is Oath of Fealty. A huge "mall," 1 mile on a side, is built to house, entertain and employ its inhabitants. No one needs leave for any reason; all you need is there.
ETA I could see an Elon Musk or some such building such an edifice.

Had forgotten about that book ... always reminded me, and this Inequated it in my head, with Logan's Run and another dystopian locked-in wanting-out novel who's name escapes me at the moment.



They're available  .... some more easily and readily available than others I suppose.  I always hit the big used book stores for books in which I feel I need to own an actual material copy, which I do quite often.  Then there's eBay and Amazon among others.  Mr K's down here in the Carolinas and Tennessee.  Book World in Columbia and Books A Million, etc.  They're available you just gotta look.



Oooooo yeah, forgot about that one, good one.  There's actually been what, four or five movies based roughly on that book.  I may have to read it again, just for fun. First time I read it was while stationed in Italy when this Japanese-American buddy of mine turned me on to it in the mid 80s.  Our primary mission over there at the time was to jump in and secure the Space Shuttle if it had to make an emergency landing in the hemisphere.  One parricular practice run we made, they named it Operation Screaming Fist.  We always wondered who it was up in G2 or S2 that was the Neuromancer fanboy.

There is a town in Alaska like that already.

I've not read all of the OP's list but Lucifers Hammer is one that "we" have no control over, and we've already had a few "close" (as solar scale measurements go) brushes...

Additionally, relatively localized versions of LH can/have happened and will happen again, due to weather/geological events.  Look at the after affects of the various big ass hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.

This "mall" was a single edifice, a few hundred feet high. It was an amazing book.

You know the inherent problem, with such a communal living environment/structure, is food production.  Same problem incurred with long term underground sustainability.

How was this overcome in the book Frank, I forget?  

BTW, I've been meaning to re-read that book for years ... just got too busy.  Two of my favorite authors obviously.

I gotta admit that I am surprised that no one mentioned the most likely scenario ....

... I intentionally didn't list it thinking I'd be called on it given what Newt Gingrich and everyone who knows about our inherent weaknesses in this country and our complete and total dependency upon electricity,  refrigeration, train and 18 wheeler transport, etc.

I've only read two of those, but based on six years of following the UAP/UFO topic, I would say "Childhood's End" fits pretty well, in a general sense, with what could be coming.

Statistically, Lucifer's Hammer is absolutely guaranteed to become reality.  Think about it.  WHEN it happens is anybody's guess.

I love that book, have read it twice.  Often think of it while driving in particularly heavy rainstorms.
