Kind of a click-bait thread title.
This is the best synopsis I've seen so far, published earlier today: DISCLAIMER, this came from The Guardian... "The math is difficult for McCarthy. With such a narrow majority, McCarthy can only afford to lose four Republican votes and keep his gavel, assuming every House Democrat votes against the speaker. However, if some Democrats vote “present” on the motion, the threshold for a majority would be lowered, which could help McCarthy survive. Speaking to reporters after a meeting with his conference, McCarthy appeared somewhat resigned to his fate, even as he said he was “confident” he could hang on. “If five Republicans go with Democrats, then I’m out,” McCarthy acknowledged. A reporter said: “That looks likely.” |
