The number duplication thing was driving me up the wall, so after I posted the photos I sanded down the trademark and serial number on the freehand fan-style pipe (the first 089), removed all the stain/finish, and re-stamped and re-stained it. So it is now number 094.

Haven't been making as many pipes in the past couple of weeks - I have been busy with my boring second job.
But, my wife and I are thinking about trying to buy an acre or two of land on Kauai, for growing tobacco. If it works, it would be hilariously cool to have my own brand of tobacco (plus, I already have experience with all of ATF's stupid regulations) ... and if it doesn't work, it might still allow us to tax deduct an annual trip to Kauai to check up on the agricultural division of Vinland Pipes, LLC. Maybe there are some sweet farm subsidies and tax breaks as well. |

I have been unpleasantly busy, and have not really had time to make many pipes.

New photos: Here is the one I finished about a month ago. It was the "prototype" or "first draft" of a custom pipe, with an especially large chamber. The pictures are not great. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/1715/P1014001_JPG-804095.jpg https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/1715/P1014002_JPG-804096.jpg https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/1715/P1014004_JPG-804098.jpg https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/1715/P1014003_JPG-804097.jpg This is the second pipe I made for the same customer (and just finished this morning). He told me to do whatever I wanted, and not be constrained by the previous pipe. I really like this shape. HOWEVER, as you can see in the last two photos, some cracks were revealed in the wood (on the bottom of the shank), just as I was finishing the shape. . I am sending him the pipe anyway, because the shape is so nice, and the pipe is perfectly functional - and if he wants to keep it, there is no charge. I like both 99 and 100. I think designs like that would be really cool if you sandblasted them after the final shaping, to kind of soften the lines a little.
Looking forward to this weekend when the temps are going to be decent so I can get my pipe out. I haven't smoked in ages due to the weather. |

I have not posted in a while, because my pipe-making has slowed down a little. However, I have finished one recently, and am currently working on two more (one for an afrcommer). I have also ordered some patches, so that I can now include cool "swag" with the pipes (and to Cola Warrior). Here's a sample of what it will look like: https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/1715/vinland_patch-874839.jpg View Quote |

I'm looking forward to what you come up with, I've been enthralled by Danish pipes since I started collecting Karl Erik pipes. I may try my hand at a few myself once I get my garage cleaned out.

A new cigar bar just opened here and the sign on the door says they welcome pipe smokers. All the others are cigar only. Gonna have to take my Vinland out and show it off.

These are gonna take some time, strictly files and band saws for shaping from here on out. There's a third pipe in the works that I won't post til it's done, but I will say that it's planned to be a hefty volcano with the briar burl cap on the bottom. |

Oh, and I found the missing pipes. I guess I finished them, and just put them away with the rest of the “inventory” and forgot to take pictures.
I’ll try to snap some photos soon, because a couple of them are actually really nice. |

103 is a groovy one. I was thinking of doing a swirl in my next pipe.
I need to get the stem fitted to this, and get it stained. I'm extremely pleased with the size and shape though. Attached File |

Any ideas on bowl coatings? I haven't thought about it, probably should do some research on the subject sometime soon...work has me bogged down. |

View Quote From looking around and talking to people, my impression is that there isn’t some secret magical way to do it, but the one I have settled on is to put a very thin coating of quality maple syrup inside the bowl, and then fill it with activated charcoal powder. Once you’ve done that, you let the pipe sit for a week, and this will allow the charcoal/syrup to combine and harden on the sides of the bowl - and then you just empty out the unused charcoal and you are set. Of course, don’t forget to stick a pipe-cleaner down the bore (or draft hole), to keep it from getting blocked. |

I have a pipe from my grandfather that was seasoned with "pure honey" as the stamp reads. Thought about it for a while, but I think I'll abstain from that.
I had some oxblood and light tan dyes come in the mail today, I like the effects but sort of wish it wound up darker. I did thin the dye down with denatured alcohol, but I applied several coats. Hey, it's my first time - I'll go easy on myself Attached File Need to get the stem fitted next, and I need to buy the tenon turning tool for that. |

View Quote Yeah, I resisted buying it for a while, trying to just shape the tenon with a dremel and sanding, but I eventually caved and got the tool. ETA: The nice thing about stain is, that if you don't like it, you can easily sand it down and apply another stain - especially if you want to go darker. I have re-stained a number of pipes. |
|
[#50]
I love the grain too, hence why I went lighter with the stain. I may darken it a bit though, it's very orange and that wasn't my original intent.
The next two planned pipes are going to be fun to do now that I have the drilling figured out |
