Because why not. Bubba already got his hands on this 1916 Spanish Mauser, let’s make it something cool. Something that takes a detachable, impractical sized magazine, in a barrel length that is almost too short. (But legal ATF man) for 7.62x51.
Attached File As it started next to a legit FR7. As you can see bubba gave it the bad touch. Bold trigger, turned down bolt, dumbass ported brake. Came with a tasco scope which I used to see if it was accurate and worthwhile to spend time on. Headspace was good with NATO gauges. Attached File Barely fits Attached File Choppy choppy Attached File All contoured to match Attached File All Mocked up |

I was worried until I saw the lathe
This will turn out nice I think |

Quoted: I like where this is going. What are you doing for sights? View Quote Not set in stone yet. I have two ideas An FR7 rear sight I already have but it’s not the greatest setup. Or some combo of HK diopeter, and a non railed quick attach scope mount. I really don’t want to just put a rail on it, but it’s already drilled and tapped for weaver mounts. |

Quoted: What magazine? Or did you mean the internal Mauser magazine? View Quote Big detachable external magazine: Attached File Attached File Probably use an M14 mag on this one. |

With a big mag and the FR7 not-a-gas-tube you'll need to tell everybody at the range it's a semi-automatic bolt action.
|
|
Deatchable Cetme mags or bust. Maybe take a demil cetme and use the magwell and weld it . Thst way it fits the cetme mag and can narrow down to the mauser reciever. Two tack welds and see where it goes
|
|
whatever you do, be sure there's a drum mag that can fit your well.

Y’all are a bad influence.
Attached File Relief cut in the receiver to accommodate the wider mag. Attached File Mock up with rear trigger guard tacked to the mag well sides and mag body inserted. |

Quoted: Too beucoup. It's wider than a M14 mag. I'll think about it though. I'd have to remove the upper sheet metal weldment at least and because the cetme mag isn't tapered, cut more out of the action at the front. View Quote May look at that route. Wont be removable...though... |

View Quote That’s certainly the quickest easiest route. It’s how I did the P17 posted above. Feeds from stripper clips. The MG13 Mauser actual pops of with regular floor plate latch. I would like to take this one a step further though. |

Shh, don't tell people about MG13 mags, they're awesome for projects like this, and still cheap. They feed 7.92x57, 7.62x51 and 6.5x55 in various projects of mine. I'm not a huge fan of BAR mags, but if you need long action length, maybe.
Cool work. Pre-butchered milsurps are, IMHO, unless very historically significant or easily fixed, fair game. The spanish themselves butchered that 1893/1916 to a FR7, then bubba got it, so it's on like donkey kong. |

This is a cool build. I have a beater Spanish Mauser that was poorly sporterized I got for cheap. I don't have the tools to do something like this, but will be following it to see how it turns out.
ETA: I also have an FR8. It's one of the few milsurps where you can go to a random store and buy ammo for it. One of the great things about the rifle. Sure, it's far from perfect, but mine works fairly well. |

Hard to tell for sure just from the picture. Kinda wish I could have taken a good look at it in-person. |

What are you going to do for a rear sight? A G3 drum would look neat

I have an FR7 and a FR8 in my Mauser collection. The forerunners of the modern scout rifle.
