Done this a million times to watch movies. Hook laptopto home theater receiver via HDMI cable. Now, all of a sudden, I get no sound no matter what I do, but video is fine. Tried all the normal fixes, but nothing helps.

Yes, HDMI device shows up & is set as default.

Any ideas?

Alright, never hurts to ask.

perhaps list what you've tried to get more pointed responses?

Have you tried eliminating the receiver and going direct to TV?

I would suggest eliminating variables until you find the culprit.

Looks like the home theater receiver is messing with me, but still makes no sense as I didn't change anything that always worked

You could have port lint in The laptop

verify normal sound in laptop
swap cables
try alternative hdmi playback device
try another monitor

curse microsoft
get a mac

Okay, so you've singled out the problem component.

Unfortunately, if you've changed nothing it may be giving up the ghost and there's not much
you can do at home to repair (I'm guessing given this post). May want to check the pins on the HDMI port for FOD and bent/broken pins/parts.

Otherwise...she needs repair/replace.

ETA: does it have multiple HDMI ports? Perhaps try a different one?

This used to happen to me as we used the laptop in multiple rooms.

Plug it in

Hit the windows key and type device manager.

Once it’s open click on audio device/ sound card whatever and disable the device. Re enable it and the sound should work again.

You can also do it through the sound portion of the control panel.

Just disable and re enable. For whatever reason moving it between TVs did something to the driver or something. It would show that everything was working, but no audio output.

Hope that helps @Never-Enough
