You’ve got to use a good ginger beer, not ginger ale. Ginger ale diet or otherwise is way too sweet
Makers with Spectacular brand ginger beer and lime is usual go to WAY better than a Moscow IMO |

I like Goslings, but I'm not that worried about the sweetness. I add a splash of Agave to mine which makes it even better, to me, so my KY Mule is pretty damn sweet to some people's tastebuds.
Making them with a great Bourbon makes them a lot better IMO, and of course, Woodford Reserve is my go-to. But for a well Bourbon I use VOB or JTS Brown (which is a hidden gem, I think, for the stupid low price.) ETA: I think a quality lime juice is a key too, if you're not going to squeeze your own. Right now I've got RealLime in the fridge. It's okay. I had some that was better last time, but I couldn't find it at the store and don't remember the name of it, so I'm no help there. |

I get the Cock and Bull diet ginger beer, and Key Lime juice. Usually we always have Larceny and that makes a good mule, or else whatever bourbon I don't like enough to drink neat.

I'm drinking a KY Mule hot, the past couple of nights.
Trying to figure out what to call it. Hot KY Mule? Not a very good name, is it?

We did a tasting with 3 different ones for a Dark and Stormy night (replace Bourbon with Rum), and Q Mixers was my favorite of the bunch.

Daughter is a big fan of Moscow mules. She was with us the past couple weeks, and decided to try a mule with bourbon (Buffalo Trace). Both of us agreed they taste so much better, and didn't even know that Kentucky mules were a thing.
Don't remember what ginger beer she used, though. |
