Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 VR

Yep.   That's the last lens I want.   I have paired down my lens a little, but still want a "do all" lens.   Currently have sum great lenses in the vmax fleet........fast as hell 85mm, fast 24-70, fast 70-200, but now I find myself wanting a do all lens.

I want that Nikon lens, but gaaaaawddd, $946???!!!!!     I don't want it THAT badly.    What other walk around lens has that range (roughly 28-300mm) that would be comparable to the Nikon, but much more lessor in monies?

Currently using a D750 body.

If it is the last lens you are going to buy, you deserve nothing but the best for you and your Nikon. Anything else would be blasphemy.  You are worth it!!! Go for it.

I have had good luck with Nikon factory refurbs from both BH and Adorama.

I find I almost always grab my Tamron G2 70-200mm lens.   That lens really can perform and I've been extremely happy with it, but as has been mentioned, I always have an event or purpose when I use it.   Only thing I don't like about it, is it is your typical 70-200mm lens.......a bit of a chunk to lug around.

But often times I just want to wander around like a zombie, and a smaller yet capable lens wld be nice to have.

I do love it. It's my vacation lens. I can use it for everything, and still travel (relatively)  light.

I thought about getting this lens, just for this reason.  I've taken a few trips that were not specifically for photography, but I still wanted to take a camera.  But, I also have a Sony RX100II, which fills that role nicely, and it is quite small.

As of right now, my 35 f/1.8 has become the lens that stays on my camera all the time.  I would be very happy with that, and a 70-200 in the bag.

Here is one in mint condition for $575. I have bought from UPP 4 times, the ratings for every purchase were better than i expected!

As a "jack of all trades, master of none", the 28-300mm is a good one-lens travel lens. I personally use a two lens combo for the slightly improved image quality:
24-85mm
70-300mm G VR

Do some reviews/comparisons. If I remember correctly, the third-party makers seem to have some really good alternatives to the Nikon lens.

Nikon AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR

After thinking about this more, what I really want is an outdoor light weight zoom with VR.   Can pick these lenses for cheep on ebay, which wld be perfect for day time walk around long distance shooting.

And for inside shooting, I wld grab my 24-70 Tamron anyway.

Think i'm getting closer to figuring out wut I want.    lol

DO IT! I have a DX/APS-c Nikon D500, and I use a 18-300 f/3.5-5.6 with it set me a cool $1,000, but worth every penny. According to most review this lens is not all that sharp at 200mm and beyond, but it is more than adquate for me needs.

I have that lens and it's my go to for all around photography if I don't want to tote along my 600mm (wildlife) lens. I use it with my Nikon D7500 and absolutely love it. Well worth the money.

I would go for it, ie buy it. I know it is a bit steep, but it is probably worth every penny. I recently paid a princely sum to  get a SotA APS-C/DX Sony A6600 w/18-135 lens, and a Sony 10-18 & 70-350 lenses.

Actually I am waiting for the Sigma 16mm to drop in price, but it hasn't budged much in the past year or so, and since here in Kalif, we are still on a hard lock-down, nothing for me to take photos of, so I will hold out until I actually need it.

BTW my ex-BIL who was an asthmatic, CVD-19 to his death, he was only 72.
