The application also specified upright marble. Didn't they change out all the marble ones for granite at some point because the marble eroded from weather over time?

Maybe some places but not all. My GGG-Grandfathers headstone has eroded to the extent you cannot read it, to get it replaced you must fill out a form and send it in. Sometimes it helps if the person was of some importance.

Sometimes, if a gravestone is damaged and they make a replacement they dispose of the damaged one. How that is handled is not clear to me.

There was an issue at Arlington where those damaged tombstones were being used as steppingstones or otherwise disposed of in a disrespectful way as I recall.

Mystery solved: Vet tombstones used for Missouri patio were discards

The rural Missouri homeowner whose patio made from military headstones sparked anger among veterans "used poor judgment," but did nothing illegal -- or malicious -- when he scavenged discarded defective markers from a local landfill, authorities said.

The patio, which was made up of about 150 headstones with veterans’ names, made national news when a veteran posted photos of it to Facebook. That prompted an investigation by the federal National Cemetery Administration as well as a probe by the Ozark County sheriff. But when the apologetic homeowner told officials where he got the gravestones, authorities simply had the patio removed.

Yep, I could never do that., stepping on them, to some, it's 'just a tombstone' albeit out of spec.
The news story described him as 'simple minded'.
Nice of them to build a new one for him.
The headstones are set to be buried at a nearby cemetery that will be attended by local Cub Scouts and an honor guard. Local veterans are reportedly going to help the homeowner replace the patio.

What do you mean by interpretation.  Where the fire station is in google maps is where it is shown on that old map.  So that fire station has been there since at least 1954.

This right here. I also worked at one and SOP was to bust them up first. Maybe this was why the SOP was brought about.

Historic Arials shows the new firehouse lot as have nothing but trees from 1938-1960 in 1960 shows a small house in back of the firehouse lot.

In 1968 both lots have commercial building.

So it doesn't look like it could have ever been a cemetary.

OP where are the lot are the head stones?

Did you also find bones?

These might not be graves but rather just discarded tombstones. IIRC there was a big fiasco years ago where the VA just buried bodies on top of other bodies and discarded the old tombstones. Something like that. I believe that someone found a bunch of tombstones just trashed in the woods.

Yes Sir, I read where they estimate there are 20,000 unmarked graves on the Oregon Trail.  That's crazy to think that 20,000 people died on the trek West.  Here in Wyoming people occasionally find unmarked graves from that era.

you would think that if someone is being shady, they aren't going to dispose of the body under a grave stone.

Either it used to be a cemetary, which it appears from historic arials that it was not, or they are discarded old / replaced headstones.

This, I'm a funeral director and can tell you the funeral directors doing stupid lazy shit aren't going to the trouble of burying someone and setting a stone. This is either an old cemetery that someone thought they could avoid land issues with if they knocked the stones over and covered them or its discarded stones for whatever reason. I've got 3 VA markers that they screwed up in a shed that have been there for probably 30 years. When I worked for a rural fh in college a local town caught a guy dumping about 2 dozen stones from the early 1900s in a creek. He'd bought a piece of property to develop and found the family cemetery in a thicket of mountain laurel. Rather than go through the process of declaring it and establishing an easement for it he was going to dump the markers and leave it a green area for the neighborhood he was trying to develop. He got in a shit ton of trouble over it.

Being that Charlie a Black man in the 1950's I think there is a chance that if this stone was discarded it was with nefarious intent.

They both say Southview Cemetery.

If these are discarded stones, it would make sense that they came from the same cemetery.

What does not make sense is the location they were found it.

One buried in 1957 the other 1985. The other data posted showed date of death of Merkerson was 1951 but a different cemetery but that data showed him to be a WW2 vet which the headstone shows. It would be unlikely that a headstone from 1985 would be found discarded at a commercial building lot.

In 1968, the lot where stones have been found were commercial buildings, which would indicate they would have been dumped there or placed there before 1968 which would have only been 10 years or less. No pics of land between 1960 and 1968 so don't know when the commercial buildings were built.  The possibility that the headstones were upgraded due to wear seems unlikely.

That leave the possibility that there was something wrong with the originals and they were re-done. However when comparing the Lemons headstone application to the headstone, all the info is the same so it doesn't look like the stone was replaced due to error.

It looks like the  mystery deepens
