It was one of those B-West sidefolder AK's, identical to this one, and in a few hundred rounds it started to come apart because it was one of those with the improperly heat treated receivers.

But I was hooked.  I have bought, traded, sold, collected, shot, cussed and discussed guns ever since then.

Twelve years ago I finally gave up all my AK's and  switched to AR's.  In the 1990's through the 2000's I had mostly Glocks.  Now I have none.

I've never looked back.

What a long, strange trip it's been.

My first was a 16” Bushmaster HBAR during the ban as SCOTUS was debating Bush v Gore. It got parted out over the years. I wish I had kept the C7 upper but I doubt my old eyes could use it anymore.

Mine was a stainless mini-14.  Bought it new in early spring of 1997.  I still have it.

Bought a Sendra Ar-15 kit out of Survival Guide in 1983. Was supposed to be a CAR clone but the 6" welded on tube/flash hider was pretty meh.

That was an 11.5" barrel with a 1 in 11 twist. It just sorta randomly distributed bullets and was quite frustrating.

Mine was a mini-14. I tried really hard to get that thing to shoot 2 shots within 2 inches of each other. Was at a gun show and bought a Saiga carbine in 223 for like $200. First time I shot that and all the rounds stayed together I sold the mini-14. It was the second best day with the mini-14, the first being the day I bought it.

The term MSR is an attempt to pacify those that believe you have no right to a fighting rifle.

Yup.  It's a crappy euphemism for a martial/fighting arm.  Sure, it can be used for sporting purposes, but that's not why it exists.

As for my first modern fighting rifle, it was this one, which was built for around $550.  Pictured with my first automatic handgun.

20” Colt AR15 A2.  Should have kept it as is.

I still want a 20” A4.

My first tactical rifle was purchased when I was 17. I was working a summer job in NC with the forest service, making and maintaining hiking trails.

I put the gun on layaway at 17, and picked her up a few months later on my 18th birthday.

1985, and I bought the A-team special mini14. Miss her. looked exactly like this one. My next one was purchased around 2002, a 16” bushmaster with no bayo lug or flash hider.  Then bought a few M1A style rifles, Then around 2008 I started buying the typical ar15 we see today, 16” with bayo lug, which slid into railed rifles and a few ar pistols when the nicer / more useful braces showed up.

My first was a Bushy AR Carbine when I turned 18. Little did I know that I was infected with BRD that day. It will be living with me under a bridge before it gets sold

I didn’t get REALLY into tactical rifles until I became a member on ar15.com, this place infected me and got me to go heavily tactical. My gun collection is 90% semi auto mag fed weapons, and  the last 10% hunting / bolt / lever action / pump action / revolvers etc.

Not quite 30 years ago, but around 25 years.

Colt Match Target HBAR 20 inch during the ban period.  Damn, that thing was a tack driver.

I do remember 30 round mags being outrageous.   I want to say that they hovered around $50.  I know that's what you paid for 15 and 17 round Glock mags.

I was so happy to see the ban sunset.

Mine was a Colt Match HBar.  Also purchased in '92.  In California,  of all places.   Still have it.

I took it apart and kept it hidden above the ceiling tiles in the barracks.

Topped with a low serial number Ta-01.
