Son bought a 2016 car left the lot and had to go get gas so he would have enough to get home.

Brand new cars, yes. Used 5 year old cars, you have to negotiate that.
|
|
New, usually. But that sometime depends on the dealer and how much $$ the mfg. kicks towards it.

Most people negotiated a full tank. The sales manager would always make it seem like he was being so generous, while tacking on an extra 2% to their financing rate and sneaking in a warranty |
|
New gets a full tank; used gets 5 gallons at most places. Current employer fills up new and used

Just depended on the deal at the dealership I worked at in high school.
Sales guy would let us know which car need to be prepped and tell us if it was supposed to be filled up before delivery. We knew the buyer got screwed when we had to fill the tank. |
|
If $25 makes or breaks the deal, you're a buffoon.
Also, you're not getting free gasoline when you buy any car. It's rolled into the amount you're paying for the car. |
|
Good negotiators get a full gas tank and a full sized spare.
I've never got a donut tire on any car I've bought. |
|
at the prices new and used cars are selling for these days, who GAF about an extra $30

Brandy new cars, yes. Used cars from 2016, no. Brand new fleet cars, no.
|
|
See if you can negotiate a sweet dealership license plate frame while you're at it too.
|
|
Brand new cars, yes for sure. In my experience with used cars bought from large dealerships they filled them up before we took delivery too.

With new cars & trucks (Toyota in OR) we always left the lot with a full tank.
When I bought my ATV (Polaris in AK) the gas meter just barely registered any fuel. $13K and they couldn't put in 5 gal.? |
|
Last two I bought 07+18 the first stop I had to make was for fuel
|
|
Big dealers fill up the tank. Small lots probably won't. I got a $30 gas credit at the local stop and rob from the small dealer who sold me a used car. I had to pay another $30 to get the tank full.

The local Toyota dealer advertises 6 free gallons with new vehicle purchase.
The $999 Pre-Delivery Service Fee and $285 Electronic Tag Registration Service Fee sting a little less knowing you got a $12 voucher in your pocket. |
|
I bought a used 2017 used Honda CR-V a year ago. They filled it up and cleaned it one more time, didn't even have to ask them. It was a large Chevy dealer's used lot.

View Quote Can't remember what the tank was in my Taco when I bought it new ('14), really wasn't concerned about that, more about the money I'd just promised to pay for the next few years. Just got a new bike, they filled the tank to the brim. Course I didn't really fight them on pricing, it was an alright price. Went, had a nice lunch with my wife, the bike was ready and running when we got back to the dealer. Geared up, headed for home. Wouldn't really bother me, so long as I expected it. Call it a pleasant surprise if the tank is full. |

But to answer the OP, I've always gotten a full fuel tank on a new vehicle. I had to specify a full DEF tank in 2015 when I bought a diesel, as I learned that the "dealer prep" level was only a partial tank. So I got like $8.70 worth of bulk DEF thrown in. I'm a hard charger like that. |

Generally in my experience is New/Lease is a full tank and used is probably going to be whatever's in there.

mine gave me 2. one when i left in my new truck, and a second full tank if i returned a survey they mailed to my house. i returned a week later with the truck on empty and got another full tank, and they even filled up the two 5 gallon jerry cans i had in the bed.

Dealer lot 87 octane? No thanks.
Both the vehicles I drive CAN run on it, but both have high octane tables that give me advertised power on 91+ octane fuels, so no, I don't want shit dealer fleet gas. |

Toyota dealership i work for you get a full tank of gas new or used.

No. I am sure some dealerships do so on used cars (especially luxury brands and on certified used cars). I am just saying it’s not a “thing” in that you should expect a used car to come with a full tank of gas, like you would on a new car. |
|
I fill every tank to full and tell customers to come back for a second tank. It costs so little for good customer service it’s a non-issue.

my new 2018 Ford came with a full tank, even lists it on the window sticker
no other vehicle new or used has ever had much more than it would take to get to the closest gas station |
|

Many if not most dealers fill up the tank on a new car purchace. Far less common with used cars but I think CarMax still does this.
If Xiden has his way gas will be so expensive they'll have to issue you a 1099 and you will have to count the tank of gas as taxable income. |

And I'ma need that extended warranty... for the price of "free".

When i bought my truck in 2015 i signed papers. the salemans asked if i wanted it detailed prior to driving it home? I said sure, so they detailed it and filled it up before i took it home. Even removed the window sticker and all the BS on the window lol.

I couldn't care less as long as they give me some gas. I'm more concerned about customer service. My wife and I both drive a brand all of you hate, but their customer service is beyond belief.
