I was thinking this morning, are we still producing and carrying m855 in general for the .mil or are they producing m855a1 only now?

I wonder how many billions of M193 are in inventory from Vietnam?

Random thoughts for a Wednesday morning

Officially the Marines have “switched” but they still use 855 because the A1 does not play well with the M27

AF uses what the marine corps used for a while.  Mark 302 mod 1 or something like that.  You experts will remember it, it’s an open tip full copper jacket round with no lead core instead of the hybrid m855a1.

The only reason I own M855 is because you people created a scare thread saying it was going to be banned in 2018. Cost me $1.30 per round.

M193 aka Q3131 is better.

It’s a superb round and a good choice.

Shame the usmc couldn’t keep it instead of more or less being forced to the a1

Handloaded clone of Mk 262 mod 0.  Eviscerated groundhogs from 10 to about 80.yards.  Only limited by my mediocre marksmanship.  Oddly enough, it keyholed slightly at 25 yds, then straightened out by 50.  Sierra 77 gr Match Kings out of a 16" 1/9 barrel.  Hornady 75s keyholed bad when I managed to hit the target.

M193 is still my first choice for a 16"  barrel.

I think I have probably 10-11k of ss109 stacked back. I used my border money to buy 5 cases when it was still expensive. Shame it hasn’t come down yet.

I wish 262 or 318 was more available but ss109 was dropping dudes years before any of those other options were on the market.

Dirty secret:

Inside of 100-150 yards on a target the size of a pie plate most rifles will put multiple loads on the same target anyway.

To be sure, I am insanely OCD about such things, and can count on one hand the times in my life that I have went out with multiple loads for the same rifle, but the reality is, most of the time you would be fine. My experience has been that M193 is realistically 3MOA ammunition, most decent AR15 rifles will put most loads so close to point of impact at 100 yards, that a mixed batch of ammo might be 5MOA at worst.

In other words, at typical fighting ranges, it’s not an issue.

After fifty years I don't imagine that there's much 193 from the Viet Nam era still in war stockpiles
Other than what has been shot up here over the decades we've been giving it away to people like afghans

Mk318

The 318 Mod 1 is war stock ammo based on the 855A1 having an issue with some forms of “barriers” so it was justified as the need for barrier blind ammo.

I’ve honestly not seen this mk318, what are we talking about here? Bthp, 77 grain or totally different?

Copy on giving our old war stock out to other countries, I’d believe it.

I’ve not seen m855a1 around here so no first hand experience.

I figured the Marjnes had a bunch of m855 stocked since that was the main round for them for a good while?

318 is a 62gr OTM.  By all accounts stupid accurate.

I like m855 just fine.  It works.  Got plenty.  Still pick it up here and there for stash when good deals are found.

Got some of the Colombian stuff from AIM a while back.  Getting avg. 3,035fps out of an 18" barrel.   Just like Colombian women, hot and spicy.

I won’t discount that someone, somewhere may be using Mk318, but it most definitely is not the standard service wide.

Where are you seeing Mk318 used?

ETA: I’m not seeing Mk318s DODIC on any operational GMAT.  Now I’m curious where you’re seeing it used.

Also, IMI, now known as IWI currently, is shiny mil-spec, if XM dull & scratched US cases are off-putting & shiny is preferred.
