Inside One of the Last VHS Rental Stores in America

Be kind.... Rewind.

I miss video rental.
Nostalgia I guess.
Video killed the radio star and the internet killed brick and mortar.

Family Video still has a few franchises in the Midwest. I do believe the store in Charleston IL is still open. You can rent a movie, buy popcorn and some CBD Oil

In reflection... It was amazing to see, in the 1980s, a long, long,
line of people waiting at the video store for a new release
film on VHS.

No fighting, no fussing, no sour asses.

Just good Americans.

I miss that America.

The one near me here in OK announced their closing a couple weeks ago.  Lots of movies on sale.

Covid killed the DVD rental place nearest to us, I can't imagine how a VHS rental can stay in business

Our family video shut down.  Sucks we have slow internet and don't pay for dish, we used to rent videos every week.

Fond memories of going to a buddies house who lived dowtown.  Walking to a small independent video rental which kept credit accounts and spending an hour looking at movies.  Many the same ones over again.   And ultimately renting Monty python over again.  Taking it home and watching it on a grainy tv with his dad and brothers and laughing as hard as when we watched it for the first time, 6 times ago

Now my son has the entire marvel and Star Wars catalog at his instant finger tips

I do miss laughing like that though.   Sure don’t seem to in the 20’s Have much to truly enjoy from an entertainment perspective
I also didn’t despise Hollywood nearly as much in the 80’s as I do now.

Yeah, they're dead now. Never saw anyone at the local one for probably the past 2 years. Guess they finally threw in the towel recently and will be open to sell everything they can at all the stores before they close.

I recall when my parents first bought a VCR. Our first rented movies were Ghostbusters and The Goonies.

We got our rentals from a small independent place. They had red tags for VHS and yellow for Beta tapes. They also had an 'adult' section with some swinging saloon-type doors. I used to get busted by my dad for peeking under the doors to catch a glimpse of the cover art. Collecting spank bank material at age 8

I have a tote full of VHS tapes, but haven't owned a VCR in ten years. Last time I had a yard sale, I couldn't give them away, even at 5 for $1.

This right here.

If I remember correctly, the first VHS movie we rented was “Splash”. We had to rent the VCR too. I was single digits old.

Our grocery store growing up had their own branded video rental section. Just another part of childhood gone forever.

My second job, right out of high school, was working at a video store. The payroll came from the rental of the adult films. I used my savings to go to Bible College.

Porn paid my tuition to Bible school.

Whenever I'm in my home town I get a little sad seeing the spot where the store used to be. Awesome job for a movie nut.

No where near the last.  There are tons of them in low income urban hoods.  I know of 3 still in operation in the south Bronx.

Yeah I can't say I have ever watched Netflix, or just downloaded a movie for free, and thought I wish I had to go back to the store and return this tomorrow.

Some gas stations in really rural areas where high speed Internet is non existent still rent DVDs or have a RedBox out front. I'm sure that practice will continue for a while.

I kinda miss going to Blockbuster on a Friday or Saturday night and picking up a few movies. I don't miss their outrageous late fees though. That helped drive the migration to Netflix back when they mailed DVDs.
