A friend at work has an uncle in Canadiastan who wants to gift him the grandfather's .30-30 lever action.  At this time my friend doesn't even know if it's a Winchester ir Marlin, but the Canook uncle is pretty certain that since it's not on the prohibited list in the Great White North it can be imported into the US.

Does anyone have any experience with this?  Looking for advice so my friend can begin the process.

don't know OP. But it is refreshing to see someone finally spelling the new regimes name for our northern neighbors. Canadia

If it's a lever action it should be legal to import, as long as it doesn't have a sub 16" barrel or chopped down stock or anything like that going on with it that would make it fall under NFA. A FFL is required to get the import permit and they have to mark it with their info. Expect the whole process to cost somewhere in the ballpark of $1000.

20 years ago it was possible for a normal gun like that to be imported by your typical FFL dealer, though the paperwork was unfamiliar to most. Not sure if anything has changed, or what the process would be on the Canadian side.

I think now Title 1 guns have to go through a licensed importer.
