I'm 44 yrs old and I can't remember reading a book my whole adult life, with the exception of technical manuals - of which I have read many.

Any tips on one thats a "can't miss" kind of book?  Like a book that is nearly universally well reviewed?  I don't want to start out with some kind of shiity book where I am doomed for failure. I like watching movies about planned robberies, clever heists, detective stuff.  Not too into sci fi.

You'd really like the jack reacher novels by Lee Child.

They read very naturally and play like a movie in your mind. I don't read often enough but they're my favorite fiction.
You can probably find a bunch at your local thrift store for cheap.

Atlas shrugged.

It’s an quick short story packed full of action and I am a sadistic bastard.

It is an amazing book though.

ETA: if you are looking for fun easy reads that are fiction I would consider the Dirk Pitt books. Cliche pulp that is just fun.

I can't imagine life without reading books regularly.

I wouldn't know where to begin on recommendations.

I might suggest The Firm based on you post.

Agree. I used to juggle 3 or more but I stopped, and read serially now. And need to find more time for that, if I’m honest.

Yes, but find a version that is made for knuckle-draggers like me.  Some versions don't flow well.

Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy was a really good story about the fictional start of WWIII in the 80's.

The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum was a pretty good spy thriller.

both are a bit dated, but if you read them in the "time" they were written, they are great.

Animal farm

You can read it in two days (it's a short book), it's dirt cheap, and everyone on earth should read it.

The Bourne Identity is a good read and very different from the movie.

Little Britches by Ralph Moody, and the sequels.

Good suggestion.

For well established, truly fantastic crime novels, Murder on the Orient Express is an absolute masterpiece.

Chickenhawk by Robert Mason

Not sure what topics interest you, but here's a few suggestions.

Non-fiction: River of Doubt (Teddy Roosevelt's Amazon adventures)
Historical Fiction: Sharpe's Tiger (start of a series about a British Light Infantryman, beginning in India then the series goes to Spain during the Napoleonic Wars)
SciFi: Ender's Game (alien invasion, martial tactics, mind games)
Tom Clancy (yup, he got his own category): Red Storm Rising (WWIII Cold War Fiction)

Consider audio books if you feel you don't have time to read.  Great to do while mowing lawns, etc.

I agree. I saw the author on the book show on CSPAN. He was very interesting. I bought the book and read it in no time.

ETA Heinlein has many good books. Even the books for young people are a fun read.

Asimov is great. What type of movies do you typically like? SciFi, western, murder mystery, etc?
