Maybe farm out the welding to someone who knows how? I bet there are welders nearby who wouldn't mind trading welding for machining.

Hint: Don't show them the pic of the slide in the vice.

I'm making the grips.  Using the original rear sight like Devel did.  Front sight will be dovetailed in.

I already cut off the bad part.  I may be able to use some creativity and salvage this one, but it won’t look much like an ASP or Devel.

The new one I'm not going to try to weld side plates on.  I'll just chop the grip and move the the grip screws back.

So far no one wants to touch this one, apparently aluminum that thin is practically unweldable.  I have some ideas though.

Still haven't finished the 39, but started on a 59.  It's surprisingly a lot easier.  The sides of the magwell were solid, so after chopping I drilled new grip screw bushing holes, tapped them for 1911 bushings, and cut windows in between them.  I was going to start working on the grips, but pretty sure my 3 year old absconded with my 1911 grip screw drill bit.

modded an S15 to fit.  They're the perfect size but unfortunately taking the rib off the front allows the loaded mag to spread too much and become way to tight in the frame.

Not that I'm aware.  The metal underneath the nickel plating is fine.  I'll be stripping the nickel and getting it refinished eventually.

Oh, ok, I thought the initials and date scratched in the frame were property room markings.

I'm looking forward to seeing it finished.

Git one grip panel roughed out.  Got some HiPower mags en route, I think they'll work better than the Shield S15s.

This is pretty awesome. Those grips are going to look killer when all done.

Are you leaving them smooth or doing some type of checkering?

Did your regime resolve whether Hornady Critical Duty/Defense is or is not a hollowpoint for civilian carry?

I may or may have not learned that in the long run it’s cheaper to buy a shotgun trigger guard, mill off the old one, and drill and tap a hole than to try to weld up a custom Mauser trigger guard with a Mig...

But now that I have a Tig....hmmm
