My 25 year old niece was visiting from Denmark, and wanted a pipe ... and asked if she could make it herself.
So we spent three days (maybe four-five hours each day) for her to carefully learn and practice each step, with me supervising and guiding. The first attempt went wrong, because drilling the bore/draft hole didn't quite go as planned  ... as much my fault as hers. But the additional practice and experience of the failed attempt taught her a lot!       Final product:

All of my equipment is really cheap. This basically started as a hobby, and so I didn’t want to spend tons of money. The band saw is a Sears model, which I got on sale from a Sears store that was closing. I’ve been really happy with it. My other equipment is Wen (a pretty cheap brand, but seems pretty good and reliable). Not pictured is the drill press I have down in the utility room, which I use to drill the air/bore hole, bowl/chamber and tenon hole. The drill press is also Wen. |

Good looking pipe. Does the first pic of the pipe show grooves on its side? Or is that just an optical illusion from the wood grain? ETA: and do you usually add the brass section or is that her customization? Looks pretty cool.. |

Seeing is optional as a Psychologist? As a guy who's gotten a couple things stuck in my eyes that required a doc to do some grinding with a dremel to remove the rust from my cornea, I'd suggest wearing eye pro correctly.

That was her design. The band was a bit of customization and she really wanted it, but also a concern about the shank splitting - so the band is a bit of a "just in case" feature to support the wood. |

I don't know anything about pipes but that finished product looks amazing. That's a cool opportunity. I don't even smoke and would enjoy having one like that I'd made myself.

Great work. I really like the grooves running down from the rim. I don’t clench my pipes and find the grooves on some of my freehands provide a nice reference point.
