I remember my Mom getting one of those when I was a kid.
Five pound blocks of cheese Bags of groceries. Social security, has run out, on you and me. We do whatever we can. Gotta duck when the shit hits the fan. |

[#3]
I've eaten it. I remember it making pretty good grilled cheese sandwiches.

Just a funny thing. Look at a Wahlburgers restaurant menu. The hamburgers are described as “with government cheese”.
At home as a kid ate govt cheese mixed with grits. And fried fish caught from the lake on the farm. |

It made good Mac and Cheese.
The SoCal HTF crew cleaned it out every time I brought it to our shoots. |

I rember those blocks of delicious cheese. We had lots of Grilled cheese sandwiches and pb& j.

The government is still storing it.
Wish they'd give it away again. They were going to throw it all away. |

I remember grandma having that and the gritty peanut butter in the white cans. It was like they ground up the shells and everything.

The last time I saw this discussed here it was mentioned that it's still being made, but privately sold as a "real" brand now. I'm wondering if we can't get welfare cheese in some boutique farmer's market somewhere. |

Damn that brings back memories from the late '50s and early '60s when we lived in poverty in Pearl River County Mississippi. I remember it being tasty. Over course, we ate everything we catch, kill, or grow back then.

See avatar.
Several members of my family ate that stuff. Powdered milk and canned salmon were part of that USDA program (if I remember correctly). End welfare and SNAP, bring back government cheese! |

Why is it so hard to take a group picture of senior citizens?
As soon as you mention cheese, they all form a straight line.... |

Now I’m traumatized remembering JC Penney plain pocket jeans and no name K Mart shoes. |

I've never had it. My wife got it growing up. I don't recall that I've ever asked her what it tasted like. I always assumed it approximated Velveeta.

All I remember of the cheese giveaways of the '70s was the joke that ended with "Nacho cheese!!! Nacho cheese!!!"

Quoted: Quoted: Does it not go bad? I had a poor childhood, food-stamps poor, but don't recall ever seeing government cheese. Was that a pre-80's thing? Plastic cheese never goes bad. That's what I don't understand: if it is shit, then why does everyone rave about it? I assumed it was a soft-ish cheddar/American, as people keep talking about how good it melts and cheddar don't melt for shit. |

View Quote I don't know how or what it was made from but it was pretty tasty. I would eat thick slices of it. Good for cheese toast, used to fry sliced potatoes and layer the cheese between the hot slices for a quick cheap potato casserole. |

I loved that stuff, and pretty much lived on it as a kid.
I'd buy some off Amazon, but would never use 6 boxes. |

I worked at a camp that got unlimited USDA foods, plus all the free milk we wanted. There was even USDA surplus honey. The peanut butter could be made better by blending a pound of peanut butter with a pound of softened USDA butter.
There was also a white USDA cheese which we got a few times. I assume it was White American Cheese, but I can't find any evidence via google that the white variety ever existed. |

For over hod knows the past at least six months or so the state of PA keeps giving out extra EBT funds once or twice a month in addition to their scheduled dispersement date for recipients.
Grocery stores are always packed which is annoying and walmart still isn't 24hrs. Best time to shop was suuuuuppppeeerr late. |
