I saw this video today and it made me think back to my childhood. Rode all over the country as a kid, in two different kinds of vehicles which my family owned. It was always either a Chevy Suburban or a station wagon. I have some awesome memories of traveling the country in both. If you were going to do it in a car back then....a station wagon seems like a pretty damned good choice.
You like them? A Nostalgic History of the Station Wagon Funny side note story: One trip in one of the Suburbans, we made one last stop in town. The grocery store to get supplies for the road, then hit the highway to head south bound to FL. In the parking lot a plastic grocery bag blew under the truck but didn't come out. My dad noticed it, and later said he remembered thinking he should get under there and check, but didn't. Somewhere between Indiana and FL, we ended up on the side of the road in the middle of the night with a fucked automatic transmission. It had wrapped around the drive shaft, worked it's way down to a seal and.. A plastic grocery bag stalled our trip for 2 days, while we waited for parts and the repair shop. |

I also bemoan the death of the station wagon, and am actively considering one for my next vehicle.
I actually thought the most recent generation of the Buick station wagon seemed pretty neat, but they decided to discontinue it after it didn't sell well (because they didn't advertise it at all). |

My first couple of cars were station wagons. Big caprice classics. I could parallel park those boats like no other.

I mean they're cooler than minivans, smart cars, and KIAs.
That's about it. |

A cool station wagon is a 1966 Pontiac Bonneville 421 Tri-power

I'm on my fourth wagon (all compacts). I love them: much smaller than a van* or SUV but can still haul lots of stuff.
. . . . *Years ago, my cousin replaced a Vista Cruiser with a LWB GMC hightop conversion van. I asked her if it was difficult getting used to a larger vehicle. She said the Vista Cruiser was a foot longer than the van! |

Love them. I've owned a couple. 1986 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser. Bought from the estate of the original owner, loaded and I loved that thing.
1980 Malibu wagon. The V6 sucked but it was a nice vehicle. |

Love wagons. Want a mid 90's Caprice wagon. Make it low and fast.

Subaru Onxy XT, turbo, AWD station wagon is way better than the 1970's boats that were basically floating and sliding all over the road nearly all the time. Better even than the Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser with 455 cid V-8

James Arness used to pull up on 101 in Corona Del Mar at the All American Grocery store I worked at and fill his Buick Station Wagon up for a surf safari to Mexico. He was a big guy and looked like he’d been in the sun too long. His son was a pro surfer I think, Rolf Attached File
