We will see if it works. I have been struggling almost my entire life trying to learn guitar in various ways and stages of my life. Now in my 50's I am going to give it one final shot. Been trying to practice on a crapy squier strat that wont hold a tune for shit. Well the other day a PRS SE Mark Holcomb signature popped up on fakebook marketplace that had a bunch of add ons and came with all of the original parts as well. He sent me a bunch of pictures and a couple videos of him playing it and I tossed him an offer of $600. A couple days later he messaged me and said if I had cash in hand and could pick it up that day he would take it so the wife and I went for a ride that night and came home with a guitar I have been wanting ever since I first laid eyes on one. I just love the color combo. The pickups are pretty hot to get that death metal sound but are really tame for nice clean tones. This thing has a massive fret board radius of 20" and is so flat feeling it is scary. It just feels like there is a foot ball fields worth of room on there for all my fingers. I am going to put the original black knobs back on and probably the original black pick up rings as well. Anyway, so far I am loving it even though I cant play it yet but, I am hoping that purchasing this fine pc of art will guilt me into playing so it doesnt just sit around collecting dust.

Nice guitar.  I’m in the same boat as far as learning, but no beautiful instrument to egg me on.

Nice guitar.

I'm trying to learn bass after age being on Social Security.  Seems hard to get the energy.  Having played guitar for years it SHOULD be easy but..... well it takes time which being retired I should have plenty of but then there are STL Cardinals games to watch and fantasy football draft to plan for and......

And my teacher shows up this morning at 10 AM and have I made progress this week?  Not much.

Looks awesome, OP.

Stay focused and don't get discouraged.

And toughen up those fingertips!

Why guilt yourself? I think you're taking the wrong approach here.
You don't WORK the guitar, you PLAY the guitar. Don't make it a chore.
Try keeping a guitar in the living room, and just hold onto it while watching Gilligan's Island, or whatever it is you watch.
Invariably, you will start noodling with it.
I like to play along with commercials and soundtracks to movies. Whatever catches my ear.
Don't compare yourself to other players, or set (unrealistic) expectations on yourself.
Just enjoy it. If you're happy, it's good enough.

Gotta put the effort in.  Discipline is hard for a lot of us.

I’m more of an acoustic guy so this is the one that says “come play me”

Having it out on a stand helps with easy practicing. Watch out for swings in temp and humidity though. Keep it away from HVAC registers, windows, and doors.

A big motivator to play is someone to play with. Got anyone local for jam sessions? Like a workout buddy, helps keep it interesting and holds you a little accountable.

I have two guitars I love, but even they just sit on the stands because I always got to their things to do than practice.  My main motivation for practicing is that I play in our church worship band, so learning those songs are the main way I practice and keep my chops up.  If it weren’t for that, the guitars would just get dusty.

Enjoy it! Mastery is about enjoyment and not worrying how good you are or tryung to impress ppl. And you could buy my uncles les paul book. (Me and my guitars)

That guitar is an overachiever in the strings department.

I use Rocksmith 2014 as my practice guilt trip. Started with the 60 day challenge (hour a day for 60 days) 2 years ago and kept going. There's a tracker in game that tells you your streak and hours spent. I'm closing in on 800 days / 800 hours and it's been a great motivating tool to keep practicing and playing

Mid-50's.  One of my friends went full bore with playing bass, gigging, recording at 50 about the same time my son started playing bass so i had to pick guitar back up. I really enjoy playing now as I did back in college and HS. I have more focus now and trying to keep up with my son has moved things along. I went modeler and guitar crazy but now I am down to just what I'll actually play; two electrics and one acoustic, a Line 6 Catalyst amp and a couple of pedals.  I highly recommend the Catalyst for anyone who wants good modeled amps in an actual amp format but doesn't want to have to have to program their amp with a PC. It has 6 proprietary amps from the Helix platform, delay, reverb, modulation built in.

Keep your guitar within reach. It really does help.

I keep at least one upstairs in the living room with the music I’m working on in front of me.

I also play weekly at church so that helps.
