So my phone chrome browser started doing some really annoying shit with some kind of new tab or tag grouping feature. How do I disable it? It takes up too much screen space and is redundant.

Chrome (and a lot of other stuff) auto-updates. You have no choice.

On the tab crap - yes, mine did the same, and I had to spend much too long finding out how to turn the crap off.

This is a pet peeve of mine - almost all software updates are things I would rather do without, and have to spend time researching how to turn their shiny new thing off.
MacOS is (for me) the biggest culprit. Each of their "OS updates" actually do between noting and very little update to the OS, but force on you hacks to applications which could have been offered individually, and gratuitous changes to the GUI, all seemingly oriented towards making my laptop behave more like a cellphone, or integrating with one particular one (No, Apple, I don't have an iPhone, been there, done that, learned my lesson, so have zero interest in integrating my laptop with one).
