I'm not LE or anything, just a citizen. But, as the title states I'd like to meet and get to know my local police. Do people here have any tips for doing so? A couple cities over, I see there are events for such things, but not much in my small town. I moved to a new city a few years ago, and have yet to have any interaction(good or bad) with the local law enforcement.

I've seen neighborhood barbecues where they send invites to the PD and the Chief or someone usually tells patrol "make sure you go by there and talk to some people since they sent us an invite".

You could also check and see if the PD has any ride-out programs or volunteer positions.  Otherwise it would be a case of having to find out if any of your friends have friends who have friends who are local cops, kind of like the whole 7 degrees of Kevin Bacon thing, and then finding a way to get introduced.

Depending on what your profession is you could always drop off free samples or certificates at the PD too.

Last but not least, just wave one down and introduce yourself.  "Hi, my name is John Doe and I live at XXX" then ask any kinds of questions you want, "what's your favorite (insert type of cuisine) place to eat?" or "I need to get my car worked on, where is a good, reliable, honest place to take it?" or any other number of things.

Be the guy who organizes one of those events you are familiar with from other towns.

Around here the method of choice is get fucking slapped on herion, go for a rip in the shitbox, give them a bit of a friendly race. Then challenge them to a round of fisticuffs once you run out of gas.

This guy decided an ATV was a better choice than his car (wrecked it first).

In all seriousness, a great way is living next door to one. That's about it as far as I know, other than deliving your CLEO papers in person.

Find out if they do any local charity events (or community bbqs/picnics), have recreational sports teams, etc and get involved.

You could also request a ride-a-long, but chances of coming across as a badge sniffer is probably high.

Most have a facebook page, where they'll announce community events and such.

Look into local martial arts classes. There are several cops in mine.

Sorry there are so many stupid morons posting in your thread.

Ask about a ride along program. Good way to spend a few shifts with local officers and you might be surprised what actually happens in your community.

Some agencies host things like "coffee with the chief" or other educational events.  I've talked at numerous public events in the past and there is usually a lot of engagement with the public afterwards if your topic is of interest to people there.

Citizen's academy, Coffee With a Cop, CoVID has kind of killed ride-alongs in many places but you could reach out to the department and ask.

OP- call and ask to do a ride along with them. Myself and many of my coworkers like taking the ride alongs who want to do it on their own will. The students who take notes the whole time for a paper or something are the ones that get stuck with the rookie officer. But the ones who want to be there are great to have ride along.

The ride along will get your foot in the door. Interact with them at their roll call and have a good time.

Call and ask. No kidding.

If they have a website, look and see if the PIO is listed. Contact them.

See if there is a ride along program.

Call and ask the chief. No kidding.

Lots of ways to meet them.

Hell, I have people walk up to me and talk to me every time I'm working.

The citizens academy is going to get you the most exposure with the different divisions within a PD.  I would highly recommend you contact your PD/SD and find out when they are going to hold their next citizens academy. It not only will give you the exposure you're seeking, but also a much better understanding of how your local police/sheriff agency itself operates, you really can't get anywhere else.

A lot of agencies have official Twitter and Facebook pages and often list events that they sponsor or attend in an official capacity.

Check their social media.

Many times they put on citizens police academies and have "coffee with a cop" events.

People just approaching me and asking about our job works for me. If someone asks about a ride along I try to take em if I can. I would avoid asking where the cop lives, may not be the best approach if they dont know you.
