My father served his first hitch in the early 50s. Basic at Ft. Knox with the 3rd Armored Division, then off to Ft. Jackson for additional training with the 101st (they weren't an airborne outfit at that time) He finally went to jump school with the 82nd...then off to Germany with the 11th Airborne Div.

My question is would he be authorized to wear an 82nd and 101st patch while attending training with those respective units?

I don't know about the 1950's, but during my time 1980's-1990's, if you were not assigned "permanent party" you did not wear the training commands SSI (Shoulder Patch).

I saw one exception to that while I was stationed at Fort Devens in 1991. If you were prior service, then you did wear the Intel School patch.
