Headed out at the end for the month for a 4 day work trip.   Staying on the beach at Tower 23. What should I see/do/eat while out there?  Last time I was in CA was about 35 years ago when I was a kid.

Take a tour of the USS Midway and a tour of the ship that was used in the movie Master and Commander. Other than that I can't tell you anything about San Diego. That's the only two things that we saw there... well that and a crap load of homeless people.

Balboa Park has a good car museum, aviation museum, and the San Diego Model Railtoad Club museum.  All are excellent.

Thanks. The USS Midway was on our list and I think the ship from Master and Commander would be cool to see

Seaport Village is cool. If you can get on MCRD San Diego, there's a lot to see there. This is a good time to get a charter and go out for tuna, and if you're lucky, marlin. Scripps Institute is cool.

I mean, there a lot that could be recommended.

Watch the sunset from Coronado Beach. Approximately here: 32.68443612862467, -117.18790268397402

The sun will go down just of Point Loma and will light up the water a bright orange.

Go to Coronado. Walk the strand… go to bars. Drink at Mc P’s. Visit the Hotel Del Coronado for Sunday brunch.

The USS Midway of course.

There's a world class garden at Balboa, the unique climate of San Dog makes their gardens amazing.

For people watching the convention center north along the board walk to Sea Port Village and then to the Midway is a good day. Pretty safe day-n-night for a US city along the waterfront. Lots of cops, people, lights, and vendors. Sea Port village has a bunch of places to eat and drink beer. Lots of trinket shopping there for gifts.

The USS Midway will take 3-4 hours just making the grand tour. If you find a fighter pilot docent telling a story from Viet Nam you might find a reason to stay longer.

I'm picky about sunsets, I'm a Key West native where they actually have a nightly sunset celebration. Coronado sunsets are the best I've seen. Probably some better elsewhere, but I've not seen them. As far as safety, I've never felt threatened in Coronado.

Kansas City BBQ is the building where they shot the piano scene from Top Gun. We ate lunch there a couple of months ago. The food was average, the Top Gun Blonde beer was good, and the vibe was great! Lots of fun if you enjoyed the original movie. It is a 10-15 minute walk from USS Midway, which was also fantastic.

We were there in early June. The high temp never got over 72. Absolutely stunning weather and scenery. Coronado is the same. Just beautiful. The homeless... well, try to ignore them. They do trash up the area , but not too bad close to the water. Its weird.

Go to the Gaslamp Quarter. Have some cocktails and a nice meal at a rooftop bar with live music. The night breeze and clear air make it all that much better.

Coronado island was a waste of an afternoon. It looked good on paper.

Extraordinary Desserts is a must!!!! 2 locations, pick one close to you. Literally the best dessert and coffee ive ever had anywhere.

Leftys Chicago pizzeria if you want a real Chicago deep dish pie, authentic beef sammich or Vienna Beef Hot Dog.

Sunset Cliffs on Point Loma for obvious reasons.

Whaley House Museum. Reportedly a haunted house. Go after sunset, super cool tour!

Corvette Diner. 50s and 60s diner vibe, fun experience! Closed monday and Tuesday, Wed-Sunday closes at 8.

Hodad's for burger and beer

There's place across the street you can have a beer on the roof and watch the surf, forgot what it's called. Then walk it off on the OB pier.

Carne asada fries (and whatever else mexican you like. A lot of good places).

All good input so far.
Also:
Cabrillo National Monument. Great views, exploring, and history.

Old Town for Mexican food

Lahaina Beach House on PB just south of your hotel was fun for sunsets and a beer, but that was many years ago.  You could walk south from your hotel on the beach to Mission Beach.

Both have already been said, but adding my vote for Midway and Point Loma Seafood. The Midway is great and Point Loma has great food.

La Jolla is nice but most of the people that go there are complete morons. Like walk right up to the seals for selfie type morons.
