After 6 years and about 200,000 shutter actuations, the D800 has given up.

This was one of the last frames.

I have taken it up in C-130 cargo aircraft and Blackhawk helicopters, it has been slightly dunked in the Atlantic, several rivers and lakes. Water sprayed while in boats at Special Forces water jumps, or on charity event fishing boats on Jordan Lake. It has been rattled while standing near a firing 155mm Howitzer, 105mm Howitzer, live fire ranges, Carl Gustavs, and 1600 pounds of C4 plastic explosive. Walked for miles and miles, dropped a few times, photographed countless sporting events and cute little kids. It gave it’s all.
Nikon you build a good camera.

Seems like a good time to get a D850.

Would be hard to switch brands after that experience.

I can replace the shutter assembly in a D800.  It's about 2 hours labor plus parts.  Parts cost for the shutter assembly is about 50 bucks.

It's a complex job but anybody with steady hands and patience could do it.

I'd consider buying the camera off you in "as is" condition for repair and use as a backup.

Hard to argue with a shiny new D850.

Not knocking Nikons, but I have a Canon eos50d that is over 10 years old - the counter rolled over several years ago so it's several thousand frames into its second season. (Benefit/drawback in using the "continuous" setting)
I would have confidence in any Canon, Hasselblad, Leica or Nikon that was in my stable.

I can't speak for Canon but Nikon embeds the camera's number of shutter actuations in the exif data on every photo taken.  With the appropriate exif viewer you can see the shutter count.

Canon may do this as well.  Haven't checked for that.

I don't know how Canon counters work, but I'd be surprised if it reset after some number. it's not like it takes extra memory that doesn't exist to add +1 to a number. You'd have to get into the billions before that became an issue, or higher.

You're not talking about the IMG_0001 - IMG_9999 counter, are you?

I guess I am.
I'm also pretty dyslexic & struggle with numbers - I went to art school, we were supposed to be creative, 2 + 2 could be a lot of things!

After checking, looks like I'm over 14k on the 50d. Since I batch process as dng's I added 2 more digits to the numbering system (zeros in front) to account for the image counter.
Mark me down for another dumb thought.

Nah, just means you need to get out and shoot more. I had that many shots on my D500 within a couple months of owning it.

I run three cameras for almost every shoot, though:
eos5d, eos50d plus g15.

Have now added eosM5 & eos6d.
Hoping I will be good for a while on cameras.

Is this shutter failure, or some other failure?  A shutter replacement is like 200 bucks.  Then again, the D850 is a really, really great camera.
