When I was a kid my uncle gave me the Harry Potter book because it was all the rage back then.  I was never into that silly shit but I tried to read it anyway... Couldn't do it.

I've never seen a star wars movie, either.

When you read the books you will realize the movies were a nice attempt- but fell short.

Damn good movies too.

I was never into them until I met my wife. She read all the books and got me to watch the movies with her. Really liked the movies but not my style of books.

Yeah both.
It’s my 10 year olds favorite books.
She’s read the whole series three times already.
She doesn’t like the movies because they leave to much out.

Read and watched. Grew up with the books, Harry Potter was about how old I was by the time each book came out.

Books were way better but upon multiple readings you see a bunch of plot holes and can see where she was making shit up on the fly. Side by side apperation for example.

I wouldn’t say I’m a fan anymore but when the books were coming out over 20 years ago I was really into them.

I was a little old for the books, so when people 5-10 years younger than me would make references to them I'd be like, "huh?" and then they'd call me a muggle and I'd be like, "huh?"
Later, I watched the movies as they became available for free and chuckled as I thought back to being called a muggle, since I'm magical as fuck, beotch.

Kids have read some but I haven't read any.

We've put the movies on a time or two but they never held my interest so I couldn't tell you much about them beyond knowing who a few of the main characters are.

Fantasy is typically one of my favorite genres to read so I have no idea why I never connected with the series.  Kind of hoping they'll bring The Dark Elf trilogy to the big screen someday but they'll probably fuxor it up so I dunno.

I have four children who were still young when the HP movies started coming out.  I've had to sit through them all more times than I ever wanted...

I guess I'd seen the movie too many times by the time I started the 1st book, never finished it.

But I've read all of the others.  I was at the store at midnight to get the last one as soons as it was released.

I had a 3 day business trip the next day, and finished the book in my hotel room.

It is a remake of Star Wars for wizards

Similarities: Star Wars and Harry Potter
Both movies have a hero who is an orphan boy living with his aunt and uncle for his own safety. The aunt and uncle seem to avoid or lie to every question the boy has about his parents while also not telling him the secret ¨magic¨ that runs down in his family.

Then, out of nowhere, an old bearded stranger who delivered the orphan boy to his aunt and uncle in the first place shows up and teaches the boy the secret magic which was never told to him before.

Our main character is then going to learn even more about the magic from an even older and wiser teacher later on in the movies. This orphan boy is off for new adventures and he meets some new friends and even a girl along the way.

The boy only seems to see the girl as more of a sister, even though Luke actually kisses his sister, while she is trying to figure out her feelings for the protagonist’s best friend, or as Woodall calls him, “the scruffy comic relief.”

They even have a “dark side”, which the hero switched over to. At the end the hero then has to battle the an villain, or the man who killed his parents.

Haven't seen the movies or read the books. However, I just bought the movie collection and plan to watch them while waiting for Maverick to come out. Even picked up some more movie poster acoustical panels for the mini theater.

I have read them all.  My family have watched them as my daughter and nephew have grown up also.  I would say we are big fans.  We even geeked out and took the the 2 kiddos when they were younger to Universal Studios to the Harry Potter world and got them robes and wands the whole deal. Yep they had a fucking blast

I got about halfway through "Goblet of Fire." I've seen the movies up until there.
Don't want to see them before I read the rest of the books.
Meh, one of these days.

I tried watching the first one years ago, I think I made it 25% through.
I watch a very wide range of movie types but movies/shows where the cast is a group of pre-teen kids having, I can't sit through(Goonies type shit).

And I have zero interest in wasting a second of my life reading fiction.

I read to my kids, books 1-3. I don’t remember much.

Seen a couple movies when the kids wanted to stream it.

It’s a very relatable story for kids - who doesn’t want to have magical powers?

The only kind of fiction I have ever been interested in is SciFi.  In my youth I was an avid reader of P.K. Dick, Asimov, Niven, Pournelle, A.C. Clarke, Heinlein, Wells, and many others.  I admit that I have enjoyed a few Stephen King novels.

Watched the movies last year for the first time with the kids.

My folks were taking us all to Universal for Christmas, and of course Harry Potter World was on the agenda for the trip.

I thought the movies were entertaining and well done (coming from someone who hasn't read a single page of the books). Harry Potter World at Universal was extremely impressive.

Read all the books, but haven't seen all the films. It's very interesting worldbuilding fatally marred by unskilled storytelling.

Despite the books getting longer as the series progresses, the quality degrades and plot holes grow. They don't hold up to rereading.

Its a common flaw in most YA fiction. HP just strung it out longer than the usual trilogy structure.

This. Although they lost me with the Fantastic Beasts cash grabs.

For the "watched but haven't read" folks that enjoyed the movies, I highly recommend reading the books. There's a ton of stuff the movies had to gloss over or outright omit to keep the runtimes reasonable.
