A guy I know that came here from Poland in the 60s he is 80 + today. But he has said a lot of the same.
The food store had someone in charge of keeping the shelves stocked. But as you would guess they would steal much for themselves.
They would point to an empty shelf and say what you are looking for is right there even though it isn't. You couldn't question either.
You could not walk in public with closed hands or hands in you pocket. They had to be open and down. He is afraid of what he sees today.
