Like several others have said, I was in school 13 years, never heard of a single case of lice. Maybe parents kept it hush-hush due to embarrassment?

Here’s the best advice you’re going to get from a former pediatric nurse:
Get a bottle of LA Looks mega hold hair gel. Slather that gel in their hair until it’s saturated. Wrap their head in plastic wrap with the gel still in hair and leave in for 12-24 hours. They’ll be dead the next day. |

When I was growing up (born in 1959) we never had that stuff in school. It seems common place now. What is the problem?
Don't get me wrong, I know lice have been around to drive humanity crazy for as long as humanity has been around to be driven crazy. You would normally read about people living in filthy conditions, along with other ailments that are common in that situation. I've heard talking heads say that it has nothing to do with any particular type of people or environment. The lice wouldn't be on filthy people... Really? I call bunk.

Trivia: black people are not very susceptible to head lice. The lice species that love us don't do well on black hair. For black hair to be infested, it has to be a terribly unhygienic case, like a homeless crackhead type of thing.
I grew up in a rural 50% white/50% black area in the 70s, and not only did we have the occasional lice check, but the black kids had a sickle cell check. I remember one kid being taken out of the class as he was a positive and a current concern. |
