This summer I'm planning on doing my first real overlanding out into literally the most remote part(s) of the US. I've done some lighter stuff and always felt fine with just one good spare. I'm thinking about bringing a second, but that's adding a decent amount of weight and taking up a lot of space in my truck bed.

Just curious if I'm being overkill?

Deep remote off-roading is where 2 is 1, 1 is none is an absolutely true statement.

I would bring a patch kit and compressor as well as 2 spares.   Sometimes easier to patch and pump until you get to level/stable ground.

One spare. Plug kit and pump/compressor is how I roll.

Cool. I have a compressor and patch kit. I think I'll see if I can pickup an extra cheap. If nothing else it'll give me peace of mind. : )

If you have room for two spares, do it...and a plug kit/compressor.

My buddy and I were in southern Arizona hunting javelina, probably 8-10 miles from any decent road. Second day hunting we got two flats, one tire was trashed the other was pluggable, if he had a plug kit and compressor. Thankfully he had two spares.

I only take one spare, plus plug kit and compressor, but I often travel with friends who have the same wheel and tire size so if it really came down to that we can help each other out. Worst case, we leave one vehicle and take the others to get a new tire(which would suck).

I have two spares in my truck at all times, unless I need the bed space. The back roads and trails here in AZ can be absolutely brutal. Even careful driving can result in a flat.

I've been out once where I've gone through two spares. I also carry a portable air tank and patch kit.

If your don’t have a spare, or in there case the tools to change a tire it could mean your life. They were pretty lucky. They were stranded with no food or water
And out of cell Service range. He drove it as far as it could go brakes went out too when the tire or what’s left of the wheel tore the hose.

For the record, it's not uncommon to see vehicles in southern Africa with four spares- two on the front bumper, two on the rear.

What brand & size of tires. Made in the USA or Chinese shit?

If you are running 20 inch Hwy Tires, I'd take 2 spares. If Chinese OR tires, I'd bring 2 spares. If 17 inch Quality US made AT or MT tires, 1 spare should be enough with a compressor (that connects to your battery terminals) and a tire plug kit. I have plugged sidewalls with my kit.

I use this one and have plugged 4 tires with it.

Air down your tires when going off pavement.
15 to 18psi will give your tires lots of puncture protection.

Lots of states that have off road trails also have Volunteer 4x4 Rescue Groups. I'm a member of the Off Road Portal and have an app on my phone where I can request help.
https://offroadportal.org/

I also receive alert to others needing help in my area. Plus I'm an Admin for the Missouri 4x4 Rescue group on Facebook that is sponsored by RhinoUSA. You might look on Facebook for the states your are going and join their 4x4 Rescue group page.

I've helped rescue 3 vehicles as part of the Missouri 4x4 Rescue group.

Bring two spares, a compressor, and a plug kit. I shredded a tire in Death Valley and still had 30 miles of rocky desert two track and an hour and a half of pavement until I got to cell service.
