Originally trained to be a medic (b/c he was a foreign national who couldn't be trusted at the time with a gun), he was later transferred to intelligence and his job was to interrogate prisoners.  He fought at Hurtgen Forest and at the Battle of the Bulge in the 28th Infantry Division.
