A phone number answered by a person. The problem with phone calls is documentation and "repair attempts". A casual call to a cell phone to generally talk about a subject is much easier to not document than a call to an office.

We used to have a phone number. Then we would open a case online and call. Next was open a case and they would call you. Now, open a case and you'll get an (online) update in a few days. Even worse for software support, I've been waiting for first contact since the 16th, 5 days now. That's insane.

I would continuty check the harness if the fucking fiagram was worth a shit

Meh, with the right crew of guys, a couple days and it's done. Of course there would be signs from the swap. Unless they really washed the hell out of it.

If it were me, I'd pull the serial # off the engine and find the last Status Report that was downloaded. See if the serial #'s still match or if something did get swapped. You could also check TMI to see what the engine serial # that it came with was.

There's so many leaks on the engine it's hard to tell. Though that could be the clue itself.

If they swapped the engine I bet they just took the core and the original ecm is still on there so it probably still looks right on the computer side

That's kinda what I'm thinking. The PSR he pulled shows the s/n that it was built with. We'll have to see if we can find the data plate if they didnt rip it off. I would assume the block is stamped  somewhere.

except the manifold, valve, cam and pistons its all salvageable

but by the time labor and all the additional shit I'm going to want to do (timing chains/guides) its probably going to be cheaper to replace the motor than pull it out, change all the shit and reinstall.

This guy was in a few weeks ago, I wrote it up for front brakes. He’s back for some other work and had the brakes done.

Major PNW company, I won’t name names but they replace the calipers when you need pads because they “wear together”

They installed the pad metal side in, drove it, fixed it, and shipped it. Didn’t even put the pad clips back in

Flat out told a customer that I wouldn’t be rebuilding their cannon plug that I would only change the harnesses.

Decisions, decisions. Built out a new 5500 chassis online as similar to my current one as I could. 70k vs the ~56k I paid in 2018. Body/crane/compressor jumped from ~75k to 105k.

im going to order a chassis before year end. I'm still unsure if I want to go through the trouble of swapping my current body/crane over to a new chassis or just buying new and selling it. Other than mileage it's in good shape. Could probably get 90k for it now, hopefully at least 80 by end of this year beginning of next.

Not sure what the year holds.

I used to do that when I first started because the head mechanic (a really cool rain mannish old guy) insisted on it.  Now I just buy harnesses.  One of the benefits of an enterprise fund government operation.

Anybody else ever trail fix a FUBAR radiator?

Was down in Baja California and a guy in our group with a Dodge 6.7 diesel went full send + a bit more. His fan ate part of his shroud and a chunk of fan blade broke off, gouging a couple big ass holes into the rad and dumping the whole cooling system on the sand. We yanked the rad out, cleaned out fins, cut off the ends of the damaged tubes, and rolled and crimped them (all 8 damaged tubes, so 16 crimps). He drove that thing another $6-700 miles of wheeeling and highway driving, no further issues. I guess the shop he took it to was quite shocked at the carnage and the “fix”.

Are you doing a long block or a complete engine to swing in? Apparently, all of the C18s now have updated blocks, maybe liners, and fire-ringed head gaskets to fix the problem. They may have done something to the heads too but I can't remember right now. The last handful we've swung in haven't come back yet.

Complete engine. On Cat’s dime.  So, I’m not doing the work, but the two techs only have one working service truck between them, so they’re using our shop, some of our tools, and our service truck when needed.

Yesterday was a bitch of a day. The top transmission cooler “hose hump” blew on a 740C, and I swear to god, I fought all day, because I replaced both.  The top one went on slicker’n snot, the bottom one took 4 hours.

I ended up removing the rings closest to each end, and now have two questions.  Those hoses already blow 3-4 times a year on our trucks.  How much did I shorten the life by taking those rings off?

Is there an aftermarket hose of that size that would last longer *and* be easier to install?
