Do we need these?

There's literally no details about what the fuck it is.

What is "FreedomOS"?
What phone is it?
Specs?

Based on the other conservative platforms, the security is probably utter shit.

Don't buy something for feels or ideals.

It's just marketing. Do your homework and make an educated decision on how the thing can work for you.

In my opinion, wait and see...

We desperately need a privacy based android phone that's built outside of the tech monopoly but we can't just jump on anything that comes along.

I'll wait to see specs and the nitty gritty. I'm currently running AOSiP on a rooted One Plus 7t and no Google to speak of.

mine is Google pay
which i have used.

never used apple so that doesnt show.
have you used apple pay ?

that would lead me to think its based on your browser and its allowed permissions

i think that its funny that those are payment methods.
buy the phone that doesnt have any of the spying stuff but pay for it in a way we can track and know you have it

I clicked on the link.  Did not see the source code.  They didn't even mention what model of phone they're running on.

Sorry, but nope.  There are other better options out there for privacy/non-google related phones that are more open.  To me, this looks like a cash grab.  Somebody building a basic AOSP rom like all the 13yr olds on XDA, then installing it on some $200 phone and installing a handful of apps you can get for free anyways.  They are a small company, probably 1 or 2 dudes.  You will not be getting any future updates or support.

Hard pass, bruh.  You'd have better luck and future support picking an existing rom like graphine or whatever the hell they call it these days.  Snag a decent pixel phone, unlock your bootloader, and flash away.

GrapheneOS is what you're looking for, but no one really wants it.

Privacy is what you do, not what the phone does.

No one wants a phone that doesn't do anything useful, and useful things require losing privacy.

What we desperately need are more privacy based companies, like Protonmail and SpiderOak.

There's a list of well known phone projects that are intended to be free, such as the Purism Librem 5 and the Pine Phone 64 and a half-dozen others.

All of them use open source hardware and software stacks. The Librem and Pine Phone even have hardware switches to disable things.

Meanwhile... I looked at the website and the Freedom phone is selling recycled google pixels.
At a minimum that means there's a big blob of google code still running inside the cell modem

Not true, you can flash the baseband firmware and do all sorts of stuff.
That's the nice part and the problem.

very short on details very much on hype.

need moar details.  for example : "works with verizon"  ok so how does it stop verizon from cramming my phone full of bloatware then?

what OS does it run really - freedom os isnt a thing, it is probably something else under the hood

memory / processor

can it run regular apps

if you install facebook on it will it self destruct?

details, man..

It's a cheap Chinese phone running basically Lineage OS.

There's nothing special or especially "free" about it.

I'm skeptical of it. It's apparently a cheap phone with a custom OS on it... but that OS is pretty much freely available. It just takes some doing to get it on a phone.

The other stuff, the "uncensored app store" probably isn't worth all that much.

I will not be looking into obtaining one at all. I'm fine with my Pixel 5. I'm "careful-ish" about what I do on it. Most of the tasks I do on my laptop or desktop.

Why on earth would you buy a phone specifically designed to eliminate the spying just to turn around and install spyware on it?

If it's activated through a carrier, it'll do the government's spying anyway.

They all will.
