Inflation has reached its lowest point in 2 1/2 years. The unemployment rate has stayed below 4% for the longest stretch since the 1960s. And the U.S. economy has repeatedly defied predictions of a coming recession. Yet according to a raft of polls and surveys, most Americans hold a glum view of the economy.
The disparity has led to befuddlement, exasperation and curiosity on social media and in opinion columns. Last week, the government reported that consumer prices didn't rise at all from September to October, the latest sign that inflation is steadily cooling from the heights of last year. A separate report showed that while Americans slowed their retail purchases in October from the previous month's brisk pace, they're still spending enough to drive economic growth. Even so, according to a poll last month by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, about three-quarters of respondents described the economy as poor. Two-thirds said their expenses have risen. Only one-quarter said their income has. The disconnect poses a political challenge for President Joe Biden as he gears up for his re-election campaign. Polls consistently show that most Americans disapprove of Biden's handling of the economy. Many factors lie behind the disconnect, but economists increasingly point to one in particular: The lingering financial and psychological effects of the worst bout of inflation in four decades. Despite the steady cooling of inflation over the past year, many goods and services are still far pricier than they were just three years ago. Inflation the rate at which costs are increasing is slowing. But most prices are high and still rising. Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve's Board of Governors, captured this dynamic in recent remarks at Duke University. "Most Americans," Cook said, "are not just looking for disinflation" a slowdown in price increases. "They're looking for deflation. They want these prices to be back where they were before the pandemic. I hear that from my family." moar |

Elites who have no trouble meeing the costs for a roof over the head, food, water, medical, and transportation costs ... can't understand why people who struggle to meet those same costs are upset that prices are only going UP not down when their income hasn't gone up an equal amount. Shocking. ![]() eta: elites - those who have no trouble paying for the necessities of life AND who get to have meaningful access to the levers of power in government and society. |

LOL at unemployment at 4%.
Here's their own damn chart for labor participation rate (% of population working or looking for work.) It's still not at the level it was pre-COVID. And that big gap from the peak in the late 1990s... those people are mostly getting transfer payments of one sort or another. Their own data shows their lies, and even this is probably doctored to look better than it really is. ![]() |

The government reports that the government is better than ever and prices are down and everyone got a huge raise to offset the inflation. It is remarkable people believe king has wonderful clothes. Prices got high fast but now not so fast so everyone is fine. Accumulated increase. Government makes a problem extending their power to solve the problems they make. To much control by a few hundred elitist and the people do nothing. The keep poking the bear.

Now they are trying to spin it on the grocery stores owners and the socialist are buying it up. Soon we will have full socialism here with food and housing prices being controlled soon. People do not understand basic economics and keep giving the gov a pass. |

after 20 years in the automotive industry I've learned when its easy to see the signs of a struggling economy.
first sign. Cars fall further and further into disrepair. by a long shot people start to pass my "3 things" rule, where if more than 3 things are broke they're going to only fix the bare minimum and the car will be worse and worse each time it comes in. I'm seeing a TON of cars like that now. second sign. People are spending big money into shitty cars just to keep them on the road. Way out doing the cost of the vehicle on a single repair simply to avoid another car payment. third sign. Old shit box cars come out of the woodwork. I'm seeing a whole slew of "this car sat for 3 years now we really need it can you fix it cheap?" cars coming in on the hook. News flash, because your car is old doesn't mean its cheaper to fix. but people are throwing good money into shitty old cars.... presumably because buying even a used car is way more expensive. the devil you know I guess. I can tell you right now, this is the exact same shit as I saw in 2008/9. exactly the same and it pretty much went to about 2012. |

Economic stats and data have ZERO correlation to what people
see when they sit down at the kitchen table and try to figure out how to buy groceries or heating oil next month. Even if you're an Arf millionaire and buy everything in cash and are a "big saver", you have to admit that those savings are depleting faster than you'd like, and the cash is not going nearly as far as it did just a few year ago. |
