Will Boeing survive this?

Flight SJ182 from Jakarta, Indonesia, has gone down into Jakarta Bay.
The aircraft lost more than 10.000 feet of altitude in less than one minute, about 4 minutes after departure from Jakarta. It was a Boeing 737 operated by Sriwijaya Air. Social Media reveals aircraft debris found on Tidung island. No information on passengers or survivors.

Another 737 nose dives

It was weird when not one but two max jets went down basically being brand new. On this One I’m gonna wait to pass judgement since training and/or maintenance ain’t the same all around the globe
Rip all those people tho

Just when I thought Boeing and GE were going to make a comeback.

Seriously though, so sad for all those on board.

No. And, no one should be condemning Boeing when the aircraft is maintained by a 3rd world shithole.

26 year old 737-500 per the article.  Weather may not have been a factor but initial reports are not always reliable.

It’s tiresome to have to explain this to people, but the 737 is a somewhat common aircraft, more than a few in service world wide.

This one was 26 years old.

I thought I read it was a 737-500.  NOT A MAX.  Older plane.

Is it just that model 3rd word airlines have a harder time maintaining? Or is it just the most widely used model in 3rd world airlines

It’s an extremely popular airframe (737 in general). Also, 3rd world maintenance practices are subpar for many, many reasons; ease of maintenance has little to do with it.

It was a -500.  94 left flying in the world out of 4500 737's.  Built in 94 delivered to Continental Airlines to become part of United.  Sold to other airlines in 2004.  Probably has 75000 hours on it.  A tough airplane but all airplanes require maintenance and responsible piloting.

Unfortunately it will catch a lot of headlines due to the ‘737’ frame, and the similarity in course of events. Sudden rapid nosedive less than 5 minutes after take off.

-500 in island hopping service will have a shitload of cycles on it (cycle = wear). Maybe we have gone full circle on the Aging Aircraft problem of the late '80s early '90s
Skin blowout due to corrosion and fatigue then rapid decompression/ full on structural failure.

I worked on one of Aloha Airlines 737s shortly after the Aloha tragedy. The bird they brought to Hayes International to go through the D check was a corroded piece of shit, I think we replaced 5 or 6 skins plus numerous other corroded parts.
Can't imagine some 3rd world mechanics and airline taking any better care than Aloha did.

That has to be one of the worst ways to go. Like a scary roller coaster that last 20x longer, and you know that you die at the end.

Sriwijaya Air Crash Probe Eyes Autothrottle

"Investigators are looking into the possibility that an autothrottle problem contributed to the fatal crash of Sriwijaya Air Flight 182 near Jakarta, Indonesia, on Jan. 9, 2021. While the data has not been made public, information from the Boeing 737-500’s flight data recorder allegedly indicates that the system was causing one engine to produce more thrust than the other prior to the accident. It has also been reported that pilots on an earlier flight in the same aircraft experienced an autothrottle malfunction.

The accident aircraft returned to flight on Dec. 19 following nine months on the ground due to coronavirus-related air travel reductions.

Authorities suspended the search for victims of the accident on Thursday, with all 62 people on board presumed dead. The search for the cockpit voice recorder continues."

Interesting comment about the people on board.  Does that mean that no remains were found?

Was the impact area small?  It seems odd that the Cockpit Voice Recorder has not been found.

Pilot error.

Turn off the auto pilot and fly the aircraft.
