We have only one real German restaurant in San Diego - Kaiserhoff in Ocean Beach.  It's mediocre.  There used to be a couple of really good ones in La Jolla - The Rheinlander and the Bratskellar, but they're long gone.  German food just isn't a thing around here.  We have plenty of Mexican and seafood places, and a handful of good Italian restaurants.

Surprising considering it was discovered by the Germans.  I used to get schnitzel at The Whale's Vagina when I would visit years ago.

JKnight In about 1980 I went to the Del Mar racetrack with the owner of Tip Top and his girlfriend, who was my friend's grandmother.  I watched him lose about $3K on horses, all the while with a big grin on his face.  The food at the Turf Club was pretty good.

I'm sure he is long gone.  The food is really good at Tip Top but the traffic getting there from San Diego and back is a nightmare even on a good day.  Thanks for the reminder.

Another vote for Hollerbachs. I just wish Theo (or his daughter who runs it now) would finally get some good whiskey in at least one of the bars.

I can't say that I've ever had a distinctly German dish that inspired me to have a 'favorite' German food. I like anything breaded and fried and I'll eat potatoes most any way you cook them but I don't need to call any of that 'German'. And cabbage is 'meh' outside of good old American cole slaw.

Having said all that, Bacara's in Jamestown, TN is pretty good.

1) The Berghoff Resturant in Chicago, Illinois.

Suppenkuche in San Francisco.

I think it's my favorite restaurant, period. It's really small, so you have to share tables with other diners, which sounds not great, but it has always been a fun good experience. The food's great and it's relatively cheap for fine dining.

I used to go to The Village Lanterne here on Long Island.

It was run by relatives of Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple and he and his girlfriend used to perform there occasionally as their duet "Blackmore's Night."

There was a great place back in Minneapolis, Gasthof zur Gemütlichkeit, that I don’t think ever fully recovered from the liberal wrath when it was discovered it had hosted annual dinner parties for a local German WW2 reenactment group. It closed for COVID and property now showing as for sale.

I’m sure the irony of their “flash mob” protests was completely lost on them..,,

Hildegard's in Huntsville is the best in Alabama, at least to my knowledge.  It and the runner up, Ole' Heidelburg, have a large following going back to all the Operation Paperclip Germans working on the space program in the area.  It's good enough for me to drive up from Birmingham a few times each year just to go there.  And if course to stop at Larry's while in town.

I wouldn't book a flight and hotel right now, but if you're ever passing through, can't go wrong with some bean and cheese burritos from Chile Pepper. Or better yet, the marlin tacos at Mar Azul with a side of toritos (Mexican chiles stuffed with shrimp, cheese then battered and deep fried.)
