A few years ago I completely lost my taste for cigars.  Previously I could detect a wide array of flavors and had a pretty well-developed palate.

All of a sudden all I could taste was earth and bitterness.  I figured this would go away in a few months but it's been maybe 3 or 4 years now and I still haven't regained my taste.

It doesn't seem to be an olfactory issue - I still am able to smell things as well as I could before.  Also have not noticed any change in my ability to taste food or drinks.

I still try a cigar every few months but I never really enjo them and it's beginning to seem like this is permanent.

This ever happen to you?

God, I hope not.

Are you smoking cigars out of your humidor, or on the few occasional times are you buying from a local shop?  Has your humidor gone dry and skunked/dried out your stash?

If you are buying, are you trying different brands/wrappers?

If that happened to me, first thing I would do is go to a shop, buy something really high-end like a Padron 1926.  And if it tasted like shit, I'd probably walk outside into traffic.

No, it's everything.  From my well maintained frigador, from my favorite shop, from friends humidors.  Always smoked at the right humidity (I like them one the low side)  My favorite Tatuaje's and Padrons (yes the 1926 #9 is one of my favorites) all taste the same to me.

That's crazy, I've never hear anyone say this before and I've been on several cigar forums for many years.

I went through the exact same thing about 3 years ago and it lasted for almost 2 full years. Suddenly one day, cigars were good again. During that time though, no matter what I smoked it always tasted like dirt and bitterness, just like you're describing. I also got more sensitive to spicy foods.

I went to a dentist, an ear/nose/throat specialist, and searched through a thousand websites looking for an answer. I varied up my diet, got special toothpaste, everything I could think of.

Sorry man, I know the feeling and it's awful.

I started a new medication around the time the cigars started tasting good again, not sure if it was just a coincidence. I'll shoot you a PM.

Yeah, around 2016. I was really trying to dial in my nutrition and was lifting a ton, so I assumed it was related to that. Last year cigars became okay again. Over the weekend I actually really enjoyed a cigar. Probably the first time since I lost the taste for them. It was a Cohiba "Crystal Corona" that has been aging for a few years. Really nice plume.

Happens to me when I smoke to many cigars to often. After a while I feel like I'm wasting them, because enjoyment over cost is nill. I will take a month off and when I decide I'm ready they are back to great.

I did for a while. I was given 1,000 mg infusion of corticosteroids a day for 10 days and I lost my taste for cigars for over half a year. Came  back though.

I've found that my tastes gradually evolve over time.

I often rotate to a pipe. A nice Balkan. But never lost the love for a good cigar.

I lost my desire to smoke cigars recently.  I just quit enjoying them for some reason.  I switched back to a pipe.  I'm truly enjoying that right now.

To update this thread...  it's been another year and all of a sudden my taste came back!

Have been smoking cigars again and they taste wonderful as they used to.

I still have no idea what happened or why but I sure am happy toi be enjoying them again.

Current favorites are Crowned Heads La Imperiosa (double robusto seems to be the sweet spot), Dunbarton Mi Querida and Umbagog, Tatuaje Mexican Experiment II and my old standby Tatuaje Cojonu 2012 Habano (second third always tastes like lemon cookies to me)

It's possible you may have had something like a prolonged sinus infection.  My wife is prone to those, and has had the sinus roto-rooter surgery in the past.

Occasionally, she'll get an infection and it totally fucks up her sense of taste.  All of a sudden she hates some things she likes, and likes other things she normally wouldn't eat.

Glad your taste came back!  I would be quite upset if that happened to me.  Got too many sticks on hand.
