Got my first return request ever. Sold a law enforcement book, dude opens a request and says he needed a different version. Pics he provided clearly show he read it cover to cover. My return window is 14-days. Item was delivered more than 20 days ago (with or without counting business days). Since the clown used "item not as described," will Ebay side with him or me?
How the heck did this request even go through if it's been more than 14 days? ![]() |

eBay is not seller friendly in any way. If they can find a way to fuck you over, they will.
You’ll be giving him his money back
Hopefully he sends the book back |
You will return his money and he may or may not return the book. He can mail an empty box back and as long as he gives the tracking number of the empty box he wins. I have a bunch of books I was thinking of selling on ebay I may just toss in the trash and I used to sell a ton of stuff on ebay.

Haven't sold on ebay for years, due to their bullshit.
I'm looking into Amazon now to sell used books. Might be worth a look. |
Good luck man, hes getting his money back and if your lucky you MIGHT get the book back.
I gave up on Ebay years ago because it was so slanted towards the buyer. The straw that broke the camels back for me was a video game I sold. I had gotten Left for Dead brand new for Christmas from two people, so I decided to sell one copy. It wasn't even that much but it was the principle that got me. He got it, claimed it was scratched up and refused to provide proof to me or Ebay, and they gave him a full refund and he never even sent the "scratched up copy" back. It was/is a common scam. You buy a copy to replace a game you scratched up and can't play, swap your shitty copy into the new case and cry foul. I was so livid that I decided to never list shit on that fucked platform again. So chances of you coming out the winner are nil |

My only return actions right now are refund, partial refund, keep book, or respond now (which I've been using). The idiot's pictures include front/back of book including barcode and isbn which was included in the ad. I'm sure I can get this one closed in my favor too. |
don't count on it. Every few years i get a scammer/idiot buyer. I handle it by raising my prices, when people complain about my prices i tell them about the times i've been screwed by ebay.

Even if you say no returns, as is - they can still claim there is something wrong with it and the buyer will win. I've had that happen to me before - luckily I got my stuff back, tested it, worked fine - re-listed and re-sold it, but I took a hit because the seller has to pay for the return out of the refund money.....fuck ebay. I will not sell anything worth of value there ever again. |
If he has read the book and it’s clearly now used you can’t send pix to eBay showing the buyer used the item. Might take a bunch of emails and maybe a phone call but it can’t be done.

You’ll probably get boned.
When I do sell on eBay I select “No returns accepted” Havnt had anyone attempt a return but even then I’d probably get boned too ![]() |

Wish you the best.
I quit selling on flea bay. More to do with the new reporting requirements than anything. Had a few scammers who left a bad taste in my mouth. It’s very slanted toward the buyer when disputes occur. |

Ebay sucks.
I sold a wireless powered speaker system on ebay. Brand new in box. Retail $799. I sold for $300. Shipping was $50. Guy said it was defective. His reasoning. There was a Kanye West song where the bass notes sounded distorted if he played loud. He and I talked a bit and it was clear he was not going to back down. I had multiple e-mails where he admits it worked perfectly but that one song had distorted bass. I reminded him that the unit has 6" speakers and he needs a subwoofer to hear deep base. E-bay sided with him. I not only lost the $50 to ship, I had to pay his return shipping of $50. I sent the unit back to Paradigm and it was fine. I use it in my basement now. Fuck ebay |
I hate thieves.
I like to hit yard sales and estate sales, and this is the main reason I have not tried selling on EBay. It would turn something fun into an angry pile of crap. |
They will side with him. Had some loser pull the same scam on me. I lost and what wanted need to pay them to ship it back. And to also pay ebay for the cost of the auction. Fuck that. Haven't sold anything on there since.
That's been a problem on Ebay ever since it started decades ago, it's just how it is and you have to budget such losses accordingly.
Your best bet is to get them to do something really dumb, like swear at your and use profanity or send a message with a death threat. Ebay may step in and cover you but they will refund the buyer.
Outside of that, just have them send proof of any issues, have them box it up and have them pay for return shipping. Accept the return. With luck you will only be out return shipping if they don't purchase shipping themselves. Also I like the irony here. Law enforcement book, someone trying to scam. |
I recommend shit senders for those offending pricks. You have their address.
Won't get you your money but it'll still be satisfying. |
I haven't been cheated as a seller, but once I didn't receive a product I purchased, and eBay took forever to get me my money back. It was a pretty big hassle.
Quoted: You’ll probably get boned. When I do sell on eBay I select “No returns accepted” Havnt had anyone attempt a return but even then I’d probably get boned too ![]() View Quote That doesn't work. You're obliged to accept returns under certain conditions. |

It is a long process but block him as a bidder. Also do not connect ebay to your bank account that is your main account . eBay froze a friend's account due to her buyer using a stolen credit card to buy expensive purses . Ebay froze her account for over 3 weeks. She did get her money. There was nothing she could do about ebay and she works at the bank.
You're screwed.
Bought a vacuum on ebay. Guy sent a $5 gift card to a local business in a cheap priority mail box. Ebay told us to fuck off. Luckily the credit card company refunded us. |
I haven’t sold anything on EBay in a long time but when I did my listings always said, “All sales final. No returns.”
It's eBay. They screw sellers.
So the solution is easy. Everything sold as is, no warranty, expressed or implied, no returns or exchanges. I've sold 800+ on eBay in past two years. Not a single issue. |
It’s part of doing business on eBay. Expect every 1/20 transactions or so to be a scam. eBay sides with the buyer 95% of the time.
I have over 700 100% feedbacks on eBay, but haven’t sold on there in years.
I used to sell a lot of fuel injectors that we remanned on ebay.
Customers would fuck us over all the time, and if you didn’t kiss their ass ebay would put you at the bottom of search results meaning zero business. I sold the business to my partner. F all of that. I do FTF sales now and LOVE it. Ebay is a shell of its former self. |
I sold an item on there years ago and decided that was never going to happen again. That place absolutely sucks for sellers and it kinda blows my mind they haven't run them all off.

Seller is probably fucked. As has been said a bunch of times, eBay protects the buyer far far more than they will protect the seller.
I remember here on ARFCOM, a guy had a limited edition game console, brand new and unopened that he sold on eBay. The a-hole buyer claimed it was damaged or something, got his money back and sent back an old busted console in the box. I call that the "eBay Warranty". If you have something that is broken, buy one on eBay to replace it, then claim the one you received was broken, get your money back and send your old and busted one back to the seller. This is why I think - at least for high-dollar items - eBay should have the buyer send it to THEM and then if the item is correct, issue a refund. If the item is not, send it back to the buyer and close the case. If it's obviously the wrong thing, they get one pass. If they do it again, they get banned. |

Up until 10 or 15 years ago, ebay wasn't great but would side with the seller pretty well, if there wasn't something fishy. I had scammers several times, and while it was a process, it wasn't bad. When they made the hard switch to pushing power sellers/ebay stores and always favoring the buyer, I called it quits. You can guarantee you are going to get screwed and ebay will be complicit in the obviously fraudulent screwing. So many good sellers have left over this, and it's a real shame. It was a decent venue for odd, specialty, and unusual items for a lot of years.

Pretty much only sell gun accessory stuff to gun people because they’re much less likely to ask for returns or bitch and moan than your average east or west coast libtard. I still haven’t sold anything in years because of their crap.
Ebay (and PayPal) does protect you from bum sellers though, seen plenty of those too over the years. |

Very informative thread at just the right time for me. I'm about to start selling my childhood ('90s) toys. Had planned on using eBay. Now, maybe not.

I had the buyer file a complaint, they asked me for my side of the story. In the end they refunded his money and let let me keep the money he paid for the initial purchase. |

You don't have a choice in refunding him, Ebay will freeze your funds and eventually just give him the money and you have no recourse.
I used to sell tons of stuff on Ebay but not anymore. |

All these complaining mfers, likely the same people that complained when buyers had no power and sellers were the scammers. Easy to forget I guess.
Now ebay d g a f about anything but making sure the buyer is made right. You could get robbed for 10k, they will tell you "its part of doing business" Ebay is a complete joke now .... cause/effect of so many complainers. We cant have anything nice. F ebay and shlt people. |
