Drill press help needed, bit too small - Page 1

[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Drill press help needed, bit too small

I bought my first drill press at a pawn shop on a whim. Went to use it tonight and found that my drill bit was too small for the head. The bit was about 0.1" in diameter, but still moved freely after being fully tightened. Is there an adapter I can use or do I need to replace the head?

Ps, I guess I mean the chuck instead of the head.

General Tool used to make a small chuck with a spindle for holding small drill bits (down to a size 80). You could put that chuck in your old drill press for holding smaller bits. Looks like they discontinued it.

Changing a chuck can be a little difficult at times. Look for something along the lines of this, maybe HF or??

A pin vise will work in a pinch. That is more or less what the adapter tool above is, except the handle has been shortened and machined presumably so the runout is minimal.

I have a small Jacobs straight shaft drill chuck in my work box that I use for exactly what you are talking about.

I would have no issue using that. Keep in mind the run out in your press could be exaggerated by the run out in that chuck. It depends on the quality of your components.
